Thompson entered 2024-25 with something to prove, and he largely delivered, providing 44 markers and 72 points across 76 appearances. However, his shooting percentage jumped to 18.2, which is notably above his career average of 13.6, and the number of high-danger shots he took collapsed to 38 last year compared to his 87 in 2022-23. His expected goals in 2024-25 were 24.5, marginally above his 24.2 from 2023-24, and well below his 34.2 from 2022-23. His offensive production last season might have been due to puck luck far more than it was in 2022-23. But most importantly, Thompson has put up points in 15 of his last 18 games (11 goals, 12 assists), and that has helped key the Sabres to an amazing 15-3-0 run since early December.

Thompson had high expectations entering the season after erupting for 47 goals and 94 points across 78 outings in the 2022-23 campaign. He only produced 29 goals and 56 points over 71 games in 2023-24, making him one of the biggest fantasy disappointments of the year. Thompson also plummeted from 20 power-play goals to nine while falling behind in both shot generation and finishing ability. Still, the Arizona native surpassed 245 shots on target for the third straight campaign and registered 21 points, including 11 goals, in his final 18 outings. Thompson is expected to be ready for training camp after sustaining a lower-body injury in Buffalo's regular-season finale. He is a good bet to rebound in 2024-25, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him return to being a point-per-game player.
