Alexander Alexeyev

Alexander Alexeyev

25-Year-Old DefensemanD
Pittsburgh Penguins
2025 Fantasy Outlook
As a left-handed blueliner, Alexeyev at least has a chance to secure a spot on the Opening Night roster after signing with Pittsburgh this offseason. Still, it's a pretty crowded group of blueliners that also includes up-and-coming prospects like Owen Pickering and Harrison Brunicke -- guys who are likely to get more leash than Alexeyev since they were drafted by the Penguins. Still, the 25-year-old Alexeyev should be given the opportunity to earn a spot in training camp, which would afford him the opportunity to play in more than the eight regular-season games he did last year with the Capitals. October 4, 2025
Alexeyev was placed on waivers Saturday to be assigned to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
ANALYSIS
Alexeyev didn't record a point in eight regular-season appearances with Washington in 2024-25 while posting seven shots on goal, 14 blocked shots and nine hits. Assuming he clears waivers, he will begin the 2025-26 campaign with Pittsburgh's top minor-league affiliate.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2019
Alexeyev was pressed into duty for the Capitals last year, picking up five assists, 48 blocked shots and 33 hits in 32 games after filling in as an injury replacement. He played regularly down the stretch and should have a chance to take on a full-time role in 2023-24, though he's likely little more than a third-pairing option. Alexeyev will be 24 years old for the bulk of the campaign, and despite his first-round pedigree, he's yet to show enough on offense to really intrigue fantasy managers. He can likely be left on the board on draft day, though it may be worth watching how he adapts to the grind of a full season.
Alexeyev enjoyed a largely successful campaign after being selected 31st overall by the Capitals in the 2019 draft, posting 10 goals and 43 points in 49 games with the WHL's Red Deer Rebels - while adding two goals and six points in seven games for Team Russia at the World Juniors. The 19-year-old suffered a serious-looking knee injury late in the WHL season but has had an almost miraculous recovery, and his availability for the 2019-20 season is not in any jeopardy. Alexeyev has the makings of a top-four defenseman at the NHL level but is probably still at least a year or two away from making the jump.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Unlikely for qualifying offer
DWashington Capitals  Minors
June 28, 2025
Alexeyev is not expected to get a qualifying offer ahead of Monday's deadline to retain the rights to restricted free agents, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The Capitals made a small trade to acquire Declan Chisholm from the Wild during the draft Saturday, which cramps the team's blue line. Alexeyev was often already an odd man out during 2024-25, failing to record a point over eight regular-season games before playing in all 10 playoff contests after Martin Fehervary sustained a knee injury. Alexeyev was also arrested and charged for public intoxication shortly after the end of the Capitals' playoff run in May. If the Capitals decline to give him a qualifying offer, he'll be an unrestricted free agent, but he may have to settle for a two-way contract if he wishes to stay in North America.
