Inks two-year deal
Hayes agreed to terms on a two-year, entry-level contract with Pittsburgh on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Hayes earned his NHL deal from the Penguins by putting up 17 goals and 18 assists in 44 games with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this year. Undrafted out of the OHL, the 22-year-old winger is having a breakout campaign in his second professional season. The entry-level deal officially begins in 2025-26, so Hayes will remain with the AHL club on his current minor-league contract before competing for NHL minutes next season.

Might challenge for roster spot
Hayes could be a dark-horse candidate to secure an Opening Night roster spot, Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Monday.
ANALYSIS
Hayes is coming off a solid 2024-25 campaign in which he racked up 23 goals and 19 helpers in 60 regular-season appearances for the AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. With the organization looking to get younger, it certainly leaves the door open for the 22-year-old Hayes to get some NHL action this year, even if he doesn't make the roster for the season opener versus the Rangers on Oct. 7.
