Brandon Hagel

Brandon Hagel

27-Year-Old Left WingLW
Tampa Bay Lightning
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Hagel was on an upswing when signing an eight-year, $52 million contract in August of 2023, having just come off of a career-high 64-point campaign, but since then, he recorded 74 points (26 goals) in 2023-24 followed by 90 points (35 markers) in 2024-25. He’s not dependent on his linemates -- he was mixed and matched throughout last season -- nor does he lean on the power play for his production. He ranked fifth in the league in even-strength points with 72, and his shorthanded point production (seven) nearly matched his points with the man advantage (11). More power-play production would be a plus, but the lack of it also shows that he can find ways to make an impact even if exposed to less-than-ideal circumstances. For that reason, it seems fair to believe another 80-plus point campaign is in the cards. Read Past Outlooks

Hagel registered 26 goals and a career-high 75 points across 82 contests during the 2023-24 campaign. He also earned personal bests with 184 shots on net and 19:15 of average ice time per contest. Hagel mostly played alongside Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point during even-strength situations, which helped his offensive totals. He has found success with Anthony Cirelli as a linemate, which is promising if Jake Guentzel skates on the first line. In two seasons with the Lightning, Hagel has reached another gear offensively. If he remains on the top line, his fantasy stock will remain high, but he still has depth value if he plays on the second combination. He should also maintain a power-play role, though he earned just seven points with the man advantage last year.
Hagel saw a large increase in his usage with the Lightning last season and, unsurprisingly, broke out with a career year. After being traded from Chicago to Tampa Bay during the 2021-22 campaign, he averaged just 13:35 of ice time per game. Last year, that increased to 18:39 per game and resulted in him posting a 30-goal season with 64 points. Hagel also set new career highs with 54 PIM, 68 hits and 58 blocked shots. The 25-year-old winger should hold down a role on the Lightning's second line while seeing a decent chunk of power-play time. Hagel should provide similar production as a mid-round fantasy pick this season.
Proving his performance in the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 campaign was no fluke (nine goals, 15 assists in 52 games), Hagel exploded to the tune of 25 goals and 44 points in 77 games last year. Sensing an opportunity to solidify their lineup, the Lightning sent a pair of first-round picks and a couple of prospects to Chicago in March to obtain Hagel's services. Hagel was banged up during the club's playoff run, and although he didn't miss a game, he managed just two goals and six points in 23 games. Hagel is going to help Tampa Bay win plenty of hockey games moving forward, although his fantasy value figures to be limited given the depth of the team.
Emerging from relative obscurity, Hagel became a solid middle-six option as a rookie last season. He racked up nine goals and 15 assists in 52 games while logging 13:59 of ice time per game for the Blackhawks. A sixth-round pick by the Sabres in 2016, Hagel was never given a contract from them. His strong rookie campaign earned him a three-year contract with the Blackhawks in August, and it's possible he could make strides in 2021-22. Entering his age-23 season, the Saskatchewan native should push for 30-35 points, especially if he sees an uptick in power-play time. He'll also add a little bit of grit and defensive stability up front, as he doled out 59 hits and added a shorthanded assist last season.
