Montour inked a seven-year, $49.98 million contract with Seattle in free agency last year and subsequently set a new career high in goals with 18, but he struggled as a playmaker, registering just 23 assists over 81 appearances. The 31-year-old’s 73-point season with Florida in 2022-23 was likely an outlier -- he hasn’t registered more than 41 points in any other campaign in his nine-year career. While he fills a top-four role in addition to receiving power-play time, Seattle has other blueliners capable of contributing from the back end in Vince Dunn and Ryker Evans. As a result, Montour’s offensive upside will probably be less than that of a true No. 1 defenseman. The smooth-skating blueliner should be more comfortable in his second full season with the Kraken, though fantasy managers can only hope to see an improvement on Montour’s career-worst minus-22 rating from 2024-25. This was Montour's second game back after he took of leave of absence to be with his family due to the death of his brother. The defenseman put together a masterful third period Tuesday, helping the Kraken earn a standings point as he accumulated his three points in less than 10 minutes to force overtime. Montour is at two goals, five assists, 18 shots on net, 14 blocked shots, 10 hits and a plus-6 rating through six appearances this season. He plays in all situations and can offer all-around production for fantasy managers, though his offense is bound to cool off as the year progresses.

Montour had an incredible 73 points in 80 outings during the 2022-23 campaign, but he dropped back to eight goals and 33 points across 66 regular-season contests last year. His 73-point showing was by far the highest of his career with his next best being 37 in 2021-22, so it's hard to bet on the 30-year-old reaching that mark again. It might be especially difficult for Montour to replicate that career high after moving from the Stanley Cup-winning Panthers to Seattle, which ranked 29th offensively with 2.61 goals per game in 2023-24, over the summer. Sure, Seattle will lean on Montour heavily, but the Canadian blueliner was already getting an average of 23:27 of ice time, including 3:54 with the man advantage, in Florida last season, so it's not like the change of scenery will result in a major increase in responsibilities. There's always that chance Montour will recapture his past offensive glory, but it would be better to pencil him in for around 40 points.
