2025 Fantasy Outlook
Smith will look to land a permanent contract with the Jackets after agreeing to enter camp on a professional tryout. If the 36-year-old blueliner makes the team, it will mark his 15th NHL season. Last year, the University of Wisconsin product notched one goal and five helpers in 32 regular-season tilts, so fantasy players probably shouldn't be banking on a ton of offensive upside from Smith. Even if he does make the squad, Smith almost certainly will end up on the third pairing, at best, and could find himself serving as a healthy scratch more often than not. Read Past Outlooks

A highly respected veteran, Smith played more often than not for a going-nowhere Devils team last season. He appeared in 63 regular-season games, managing five goals and 15 points. Smith earned some power-play time early in his career but that has dried up completely in recent years. He had to settle for a one-year, $1 million contract with the Stars in free agency. It doesn't seem like a great landing spot. Smith is going to have to battle youngsters Nils Lundkvist and Lian Bischel for playing time, meaning it's far from a guarantee he will earn a full-time role with his new club.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Testing free agency
Smith wants to play at least one more season and is expected to hit the open market July 1, Dave McCarthy of NHL.com reports Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Smith appeared in just 32 regular-season games in 2024-25, chipping in one goal, five assists, 33 PIM and 41 hits. There's not much room on Dallas' blue line heading into next season, but at 36 years old, Smith may be hard-pressed to find more consistent playing time with a new team. If he signs with a new club when free agency opens, he'll probably play a minimal role in 2025-26.
