2025 Fantasy Outlook
A steady contributor from the back end throughout his illustrious 21-year career, Burns’ output took a dive last season, as he was limited to six goals, 29 points, 175 shots on goal and a plus-7 rating over 82 regular-season outings with Carolina. Considering he’s 40 years old, it’s extremely commendable that Burns hasn’t missed a game since 2013-14. That durability keeps him in the conversation as a depth option for fantasy managers this campaign, especially since he’ll be playing for a high-flying Avalanche squad that ranked sixth in the NHL with 3.33 goals per game in 2024-25. The hulking defenseman will challenge Josh Manson for a spot on the second pairing in training camp, and provided that Colorado continues to rack up goals in 2025-26, Burns could return to the 40-point mark -- he's only two years removed from recording 43 points in his age-38 season. Back at practice
Burns (undisclosed) was a full participant in Tuesday's practice, per Brennan Vogt of Hockey Mountain High.
ANALYSIS
After tweaking something, Burns didn't take part in Saturday's practice and wasn't an option for either of Colorado's preseason games against Utah on Sunday. However, he has put the minor issue behind him. Burns signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Avalanche in the summer after earning six goals and 29 points in 82 regular-season outings for Carolina in 2024-25.

Normally, it's hard to knock a defenseman for putting up 43 points in a season, but when you are talking about Burns, who has reached the 50-point threshold in every previous full-length season since 2014-15, it's hard not to be at least a little disappointed in his 2023-24 production. It certainly wasn't for a lack of power-play opportunities, as the 39-year-old defenseman still averaged 2:38 of ice time with the man advantage and notched 20 power-play points. Whether he can rediscover his even-strength scoring touch will be a big question for Burns heading into the 2024-25 campaign. At this stage of his career, the 70-80 point seasons are probably long gone, but a bounce-back year in which he notches 50-plus certainly isn't out of the question.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Slated to be key PK contributor
Assistant coach Nolan Pratt said Sunday that Burns, who is dealing with a minor undisclosed injury, will play a large role on the penalty kill during the 2025-26 campaign, Evan Rawal of the Denver Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Burns has been a staple with the man advantage throughout his illustrious 21-year NHL career, but that might change this season. Cale Makar will certainly quarterback the No. 1 power-play unit, and Devon Toews will likely man the second combination. In relation to Burns being utilized on the penalty kill, Pratt also stated, "Our analytics on him in that department are sparkling," per Rawal. All in all, the 40-year-old Burns is set to be a key contributor with his new club in 2025-26, but his offensive potential would be capped without a power-play role, especially considering his production has decreased in each of the last three years. However, Colorado's high-powered offense could allow Burns to hover around the 30-point mark. The right-shot blueliner has not missed a regular-season game since 2013-14, when he was with the Sharks.
