2025 Fantasy Outlook
Rust had 31 goals and 65 points across 71 outings in 2024-25. However, he’s struggled to stay healthy. Even if you include AHL appearances, the 33-year-old has played at least 70 regular-season games in just three of his 11 NHL seasons. Still, Rust is a reliable contributor when healthy, in part because he usually shares the ice with Sidney Crosby. Rust has recorded at least 20 goals and 40 points in each of the past six campaigns despite time missed. To put that into context, over a full 82 games, Rust has averaged 32 goals and 69 points across that six-year span. Unfortunately, history suggests that Rust isn’t likely to enjoy a season of perfect health, so rather than count on him reaching those heights, it would be better to pencil him for about 25 goals and 50 points with the understanding that he’s capable of better under ideal circumstances. Despite playing in just 62 regular-season games last year, Rust set a new personal best with 28 goals, reaching the 20-goal threshold for the fifth straight campaign while also getting over the 50-point mark for the third time in the last five years. Barring a late free-agency acquisition, the hard-working winger figures to start the year on the top line with Sidney Crosby while also being in the mix for a spot with the No. 1 power-play unit. Even if Rust does get bumped down to the second line, he would still be playing with another future Hall-of-Famer in Evgeni Malkin. Barring an unforeseen diminishing of his skills, Rust should be on track for another 20-goal season and could once again approach 30 - especially if the power play can get back to form after the Penguins struggled with the man advantage last year.
