Cayden Primeau

Cayden Primeau

26-Year-Old GoalieG
Carolina Hurricanes
2025 Fantasy Outlook
It would be unfair to judge Primeau for his play behind a rebuilding Montreal team in the last few years, but his 4.69 GAA and .836 save percentage in 11 games in 2024-25 was simply not good enough. Primeau's continued struggles led to Jakub Dobes filling the backup role over the last four months of the season. There's still a little optimism that Primeau can become an NHL regular -- just look at his 21-2-2 record, 1.96 GAA and .927 save percentage over 26 AHL games. He'll need a good summer and a strong training camp to regain his spot as an NHL backup, but if he can do it, he'll likely benefit from playing for the Canadiens, who are poised to be on the rise in the coming years. Hits waivers for AHL assignment
GCarolina Hurricanes  Minors
October 5, 2025
Primeau was placed on waivers by the Hurricanes for the purpose of assignment to AHL Chicago, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Primeau, acquired by the Hurricanes in an offseason trade, will begin the season in the AHL, assuming he clears waivers. It's not too surprising considering the 26-year-old is looking up at established NHL goaltenders Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov, and now the addition of Brandon Bussi off waivers further complicates his situation. Primeau was very impressive in his 26 starts last season with AHL Laval, registering a 1.96 GAA and .927 save percentage.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2020
Primeau appeared in a career-high 23 contests last campaign, registering a mark of 8-9-4 with two shutouts, a 2.99 GAA and a .910 save percentage. The Canadiens didn't want to risk losing him on waivers, so he remained on the roster behind Sam Montembeault and Jake Allen. Primeau will see more playing time in 2024-25 after the Canadiens traded Allen to New Jersey in March. The 25-year-old Primeau flashed some potential in 2023-24, but his fantasy value remains limited for the upcoming campaign. However, he could make for a decent option for spot starts in favorable matchups.
Primeau appears to be the Canadiens' goalie of the future, but for now, the 21-year-old is likely set to battle Charlie Lindgren for the taxi squad job in 2020-21. Primeau was solid in 33 games for AHL Laval last year, as he had a 17-11-3 record with a 2.45 GAA and a .908 save percentage. More than likely, Primeau will spend the upcoming season in the minors, as the organization will want him to get playing time. He's not expected to make a fantasy impact yet, and with Jake Allen under contract through the 2022-23 season, any dynasty managers rostering Primeau will have to wait quite some time for a return on investment.

Working in starter's crease
GCarolina Hurricanes  Minors
September 22, 2025
Primeau operated in the starter's crease during morning skate ahead of Monday's preseason game against the Lightning, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site indicating that he'll likely defend the home crease.
ANALYSIS
Primeau was traded to the Hurricanes from the Canadiens during the offseason, and he'll likely get his first opportunity to start with his new team Monday. He made 11 regular-season appearances with Montreal last year, going 2-3-1 with a 4.69 GAA and .836 save percentage. Primeau may have to head to the minors once the regular season gets underway, but he'd likely be the first goaltender promoted if Frederik Andersen or Pyotr Kochetkov deal with injuries.
