Shore again changed teams in the middle of 2019-20, which saw him combine for 12 points in 45 games split between the Ducks and the Blue Jackets. He added 52 hits and 50 shots on goal, but he went unsigned during free agency before settling for a tryout with the Oilers. It's unclear if Shore will stick in Edmonton, but he's a versatile player who can play in all situations. Regardless of where he ends up, Shore doesn't seem likely to make much of an impact in fantasy, as he's almost guaranteed to see, at best, bottom-six minutes in 2020-21.
Shore split the 2018-19 campaign between two teams, recording 17 points in 42 games with the Stars before being shipped to the Ducks in a midseason trade, where he finished with 12 points in 34 contests. The 25-year-old has hovered between the 29 and 33-point marks in each of his three full NHL seasons, and there's no reason to expect a sudden leap forward this year. The Canadian forward should be good for around 10 goals and 20 helpers in 2019-20, although he'll likely carry a negative plus-minus rating. The Ducks may struggle to score again this year, and Shore is unlikely to move the needle much in standard fantasy leagues, but he could be of use in deeper formats.
Shore's minus-30 rating was the fourth-worst mark of any NHL forward last year, but such is life for a checking center who generates an inordinate amount of his offense on the power play. Eleven of his 32 points came with the man advantage, and while that defensive showing might have been terrible, it also suggests plenty of upside for the 24-year-old if he can win a spot higher on the depth chart. Shore might just get that chance in 2018-19. Martin Hanzal is still recovering from back surgery and Jason Spezza is a shadow of his former self, and with the Stars looking for any glimmer of secondary scoring behind Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, a good showing in training camp for Shore could push him into a much more prominent role, where his creativity and hockey IQ could be put to better use.
After a brief cup of coffee with the Stars in 2015-16, Shore spent the entire season at the NHL level and more than held his own in a checking role, scoring 13 goals and 33 points in 82 games. While he doesn't possess top shelf speed or size, the 23-year-old is an adept playmaker with a good hockey IQ and could still develop into a top-six forward in time. Dallas’ free-agent spending spree will keep Shore in a more modest spot on the depth chart for now, though, limiting his production but also giving him a chance to develop at his own pace.
Shore was taken in the second round of the 2011 draft and projects as a possible second-line center down the line. He's a bit on the small side, but that's not the detriment in today's NHL that it used to be. He'll skate for the University of Maine beginning in the fall and could advance quickly.
