Dylan DeMelo

Dylan DeMelo

31-Year-Old DefensemanD
Winnipeg Jets
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Picking an excellent time for a career year, DeMelo produced 31 points, a stellar plus-46 rating, 167 hits and 139 blocked shots while playing in all 82 regular-season games for the first time in his career in 2023-24. That led the Jets to keep the defenseman on a four-year contract with a $4.9 million cap hit. DeMelo will always be more valuable on the ice than in fantasy -- he's a shutdown defenseman who complements standout blueliner Josh Morrissey well on the Jets' top pairing. Expect a regression in plus-minus and a slight dip in points for DeMelo in 2024-25, though his physicality will keep him on the radar in deep formats and banger leagues. Read Past Outlooks

Snags assist in Sunday's win
DWinnipeg Jets
November 4, 2024
DeMelo logged an assist, two shots on goal, four hits and a plus-2 rating in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Lightning.
ANALYSIS
DeMelo snapped a six-game point drought with his helper on Dylan Samberg's game-winning goal in the third period. With two points through 12 contests, DeMelo is off the pace that saw him log 31 points in 82 regular-season outings last year. He's added nine shots on net, 26 hits, 22 blocked shots and a plus-4 rating, offering reliable non-scoring production while playing in a top-four role.

By usage, DeMelo was a top-four defenseman for the Jets in 2022-23, and he responded with a career-high 27 points in 75 contests. He mostly paired with Josh Morrissey at even strength -- a great assignment considering Morrissey's breakout campaign. DeMelo can chip in 100-plus hits and blocked shots per year, but he's far from a lock to avoid injuries, making him no guarantee to return to the 20-point mark this season. That limits his fantasy value to deeper formats, and there may be higher-scoring options available in the late rounds of those drafts anyway.
DeMelo has been a steady depth defender over the course of his first seven NHL seasons and last year was no different. He managed 13 points in 76 games for the Jets, adding 113 hits and 108 blocks. DeMelo has never finished with more than four goals and 22 points in any single campaign and his hit and block totals aren't substantial enough to make him a consistent fantasy option for those categories. Look elsewhere on draft day.
DeMelo went pointless in 10 games after he was traded from the Senators to the Jets, but he had 10 assists in 49 contests before the trade. A solid NHL defender, DeMelo added 105 hits and 77 blocked shots in 2019-20. A full year in Winnipeg should do wonders for DeMelo, who has suited up for three teams in the previous three seasons. He'll likely be limited to bottom-pairing minutes in 2020-21, but that could open up better offensive chances to help him approach 15 to 20 points this season. He'll also add a fair amount of hits and blocked shots -- the 27-year-old doesn't retreat from physical play.
After notching 20 points in 63 games with the Sharks in 2017-18, Demelo was traded to the Senators as part of the blockbuster Erik Karlsson deal ahead of the 2018-19 campaign. The 26-year-old went on to set career highs in goals (four), points (22), games played (77), shots (109), blocks (130) and hits (121) during his first year with the rebuilding Senators. The 2011 sixth-round pick doesn't have a very high ceiling, but he should continue to see ample playing time with Ottawa as part of their top four in 2019-20.
Demelo enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2018-19, setting career highs in assists (20), points (20) and games played (63) while averaging 14:12 of ice time per contest. The 25-year-old blueliner figures to see an uptick of ice time after joining the Senators via trade, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him surpass the 20-point threshold for the first time in his career -- although he still is unlikely to produce enough offense to warrant consideration in most fantasy formats.
DeMelo is still looking for his first full-time NHL job, and this could be the year he does it. He posted eight points in 25 games last season, but the 24-year-old wasn't able to make his presence known on the power play. He'll likely start as a third-rotation blueliner on a strong defensive corps. Keep an eye on how he develops for future fantasy seasons.
DeMelo made an impact as a rookie pro last year. He registered two goals and 22 assists, along with 105 shots, through 68 games for the AHL Sharks. He's a solid defenseman with decent offensive upside. He may make his NHL debut this season, but it's more likely he'll be handed the reins with the baby Sharks instead. We're hoping to see another step in development. We'll start paying closer attention to a possible fantasy future then.
