Ian Mitchell

26-Year-Old DefensemanD
Detroit Red Wings
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Mitchell skated in 28 regular-season games with Boston in the last two campaigns, including 15 appearances in 2024-25. He didn’t receive a qualifying offer from the Bruins in the summer and signed a one-year contract with Detroit during free agency. The 26-year-old blueliner has been a solid source of blocked shots at the NHL level when he’s in the lineup, but he won’t provide much offensively. Mitchell will compete for a depth role with the Red Wings at training camp, though it’s possible he could spend most of the 2025-26 season in the minors. Read Past Outlooks

October 1, 2025
Mitchell was placed on waivers by Detroit on Wednesday, per Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell had four goals and 27 points across 47 outings with AHL Providence as well as an assist in 15 appearances with Boston during the 2024-25 regular season. Mitchell is expected to report to AHL Grand Rapids if he goes unclaimed, but it wouldn't be surprising if the 26-year-old gets a chance with the Red Wings at some point during the campaign.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2020
Mitchell has gotten tastes of the NHL, but he hasn't managed to secure a regular role at that level. The 2023-24 regular season was more of the same in that regard -- he recorded two assists, a plus-6 rating, 10 PIM, three hits and 13 blocks in 13 contests with Boston, but most of his work came with AHL Providence where he registered six goals, 24 points and 25 PIM in 42 outings. He didn't factor into Boston's playoff run, but he did provide two goals and four points in four minor-league playoff appearances. While Mitchell has shown promise, at the age of 25 it would be better to regard him as an organizational depth defenseman. To that end, he'll likely continue to bounce between the NHL and AHL in 2024-25.
Mitchell spent the last three years with the Blackhawks, totaling four goals and 16 points in 82 games during that span. Last year, he tallied a goal and eight points in 35 top-level appearances, averaging 15:50 of ice time in a bottom-pair role. The 24-year-old landed a one-year deal with Boston this offseason and will enter training camp to compete for a spot on the roster. Mitchell's place on the NHL roster is far from guaranteed; should he secure a role with the Bruins, he'll be confined to a depth role with no real fantasy value.
Mitchell was fantastic as a junior at the University of Denver last season, racking up 10 goals and 32 points in just 36 games. The 2017 second-round pick earned a spot on Chicago's Opening Night roster during camp, and will open the season on the team's bottom pairing. He almost certainly won't produce enough offense to garner fantasy consideration in 2020-21, but the 21-year-old blueliner could develop into one of the Blackhawks' better blue-line weapons over the next few campaigns, so he'll be a player worth keeping tabs on this year.
