2025 Fantasy Outlook
Aside from a month-long absence with a knee injury, Markstrom was everything the Devils needed to become a playoff team. He went 26-16-6 with a 2.50 GAA and a .900 save percentage over 49 regular-season appearances, but injuries to other players led to a first-round exit in the playoffs. Markstrom will be in a contract year in 2025-26, and at 35 years old, he'll need to prove that age is not a problem to set himself up for a new deal, potentially one that will take him to the end of his career. Markstrom is still a strong goalie, though fantasy managers should expect a slight regression in his numbers as well as having a strong backup plan in place, since the Swede carries moderate injury risk. Gives up eight goals
Markstrom stopped 34 of 42 shots in Tuesday's 8-4 loss to the Avalanche.
ANALYSIS
Markstrom allowed four goals on the power play and four at even strength. He surrendered at least two goals in each period, and the Devils couldn't find a way to slow down the Avalanche. Markstrom's first start since recovering from a lower-body injury was a rough one, but he should remain New Jersey's No. 1 goaltender ahead of Jake Allen. However, Allen could push for more playing time if Markstrom continues to struggle this season.

Markstrom slips on a Devils jersey on the heels of a season that looked a bit average, at least by traditional stats. He delivered a 23-23-2 record with a 2.78 GAA and .905 save percentage with the Flames, but he did it in front of a team that fell apart, leaving him unprotected most nights. Markstrom's 28.93 GSAx (goals saved above expected) told a different tale. It was third-best in the NHL, behind Connor Hellebuyck and Jordan Binnington. In other words, he was a star and he looks like he'll be a perfect fit in New Jersey's uptempo style. Markstrom is a strong second-tier netminder with great upside in his new home. It was only three seasons ago that he finished second in Vezina voting behind Igor Shesterkin. He won't repeat that in 2024-25, but Markstrom could finish in the top eight and star for your squad.
