Despite playing in 70 regular-season games with the Flames last year, the veteran Rooney will have to earn his spot in training camp with his former club, the Devils. In those aforementioned 70 contests, the Massachusetts native notched five goals and five helpers. If Rooney makes the club coming out of training camp, he figures to slide into a bottom-six role and likely will offer more physicality than anything else, limiting his fantasy upside. Rooney has appeared in just one NHL game this season. The 31-year-old has spent most of the year with AHL Tucson, registering 10 points (seven goals, three assists) in 20 games played. With Alex Kerfoot (upper body) going on injured reserve, it's Rooney who is called up in the corresponding move. It remains to be seen if he'll draw into the lineup Sunday or just serve as a depth forward for the foreseeable future.

His efforts were good enough to secure a one-year, $1.3 million contract for the 2024-25 campaign. Rooney will likely spend the season alternating between serving on the fourth line and being a healthy scratch. When he is in the lineup, he should be a decent source of hits, but the 31-year-old is unlikely to provide meaningful help in any other category.
