2025 Fantasy Outlook
Sherwood struggled to find his footing in the NHL across his first six years in the league, but he found a home, at least temporarily, in Vancouver by signing a two-year, $3 million contract with the team in the 2024 free-agency class. Besides Quinn Hughes, Sherwood was arguably Vancouver’s most impactful player last season -- he set an NHL record for the most hits (462) in a season and broke out offensively with 19 goals and 40 points over 78 games, all career highs. The 30-year-old also had personal bests in shots on goal (141) and shooting percentage (13.5) while earning 14:53 of ice time per game, so he has a strong foundation to build on heading into 2025-26. With a new bench boss in Adam Foote and the fact that it’s the final year of his contract, the hard-hitting winger has plenty of reasons to continue proving his worth. Read Past Outlooks

Sherwood initially hoped to return from injured reserve for Tuesday's game against the Canucks, but he was held out for that matchup and will remain sidelined Thursday since the Sharks will utilize the same lineup. The 30-year-old's next opportunity to suit up will be Saturday in Calgary.

Sherwood logged a career-high 68 regular-season games with Nashville in 2023-24, which resulted in him collecting 10 goals and 27 points. That's not bad production for a player averaging 12:10 of ice time, but his real value is tied to his physical play. The 29-year-old dished out 234 hits last year, and he'll likely end up with a similar total if his new team, the Canucks, deploy him regularly. While nothing is guaranteed, the two-year, $3 million contract Vancouver signed him to suggests that they're looking for him to be a mainstay on at least the fourth line. Just keep in mind that for all his hits, Sherwood isn't a major source of PIM, collecting a moderate 41 last season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Engaged in extension talks
Sherwood has had initial contract extension discussions with the Sharks while recovering from his upper-body injury, Max Miller of NHL.com reports Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
San Jose acquired Sherwood from the Canucks on Monday in exchange for a 2026 second-round pick, a 2027 second-round selection and Cole Clayton. While there's reportedly a "pretty big gap" between Sherwood and the Sharks in extension talks, the team will presumably be motivated to retain the 30-year-old rather than allow him to hit unrestricted free agency, given the draft capital given up to acquire him. Sherwood has been out for nearly two weeks, and it's not yet clear when he'll be able to make his debut with his new team.
