2025 Fantasy Outlook
Blackwood received a career lifeline after proving his worth with the Sharks last season and early in 2024-25. The Avalanche came calling, acquiring Blackwood while offloading Alexandar Georgiev as part of a larger push to remodel the Colorado crease. Overall, Blackwood posted a 28-21-6 record with a 2.55 GAA and a .912 save percentage between the two teams. Blackwood also signed a five-year extension in December, which kicks in for 2025-26. He's been just what the Avalanche need to stabilize things between the pipes, and playing behind a team that strong makes him a No. 1 fantasy goalie as well. Blackwood will be especially valuable in formats that reward wins more heavily. Read Past Outlooks
Facing Sabres
Blackwood will start Thursday's home game versus Buffalo, Evan Rawal of the Denver Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Blackwood will make his third start of the season, as he missed the first 10 games of the season dealing with a lower-body injury suffered during the offseason. Blackwood is 1-0-1 with a 3.41 GAA and an .875 save percentage this season, as he currently has ceded the NO. 1 job in Colorado to Scott Wedgewood. The Sabres are averaging 2.63 goals per game, tied for 26th in NHL scoring.

Blackwood looks the part of a No. 1 goalie. He's athletic and smooth in the net and tracks the puck well. Blackwood delivered a 10-25-4 record in 2023-24 behind a bad Sharks squad. His 3.45 GAA was queasy, and his .899 save percentage was his third consecutive season with a sub-.900 record. It's easy to point fingers at Blackwood and say he won't help, but looking deeper, the netminder managed to deliver league-average production behind the NHL's worst team. Blackwood is in the last year of his contract, and he will be looking to prove he's the guy Mike Grier should build his team around. Fantasy-wise, he's hard to roster given the team around him, but he may offer spot value if the low-scoring Sharks can score even a few more goals.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Might serve as backup Tuesday
Blackwood, who is recovering from a lower-body injury, may be ready to serve as the backup against the Devils at home Tuesday, Jesse Montano of Guerilla Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
It seems Scott Wedgewood will get the starting nod ahead of Blackwood, who has yet to feature in an NHL game this year. Once the 28-year-old Blackwood is given the all-clear, he should play his way into a split-share situation with Wedgewood while Trent Miner gets sent back to AHL Colorado.
