Past Fantasy Outlooks
Weegar was once again one of the most underrated defenders in the league in 2021-22, posting career-best marks in goals (8), assists (36), points (44), plus-minus rating (plus-40) and shots on goal (203). His reward for his stellar year was a move to the Flames along with Jonathan Huberdeau in the deal which sent Matthew Tkachuk to the Panthers. Weegar has one year left on his contract at the bargain basement price of $3.25 million. Calgary was able to get Huberdeau signed to a long-term extension, so expect a big-money offer to Weegar - who should be able to match his numbers from last year (other than the plus-minus rating) in 2022-23 - to be the team's next priority.
Without a doubt one of the most underrated defenders in the NHL, Weegar is coming off an excellent season which saw him appear on the lower portion of a handful of Norris Trophy ballots. Weegar set career-best marks in assists (30), points (36), shots on goal (101) and average time on ice (22:07). He added 118 hits and 83 blocks while finishing with a remarkable plus-29 rating, tying him with Colorado's Devon Toews for the best mark in the NHL. Weegar is firmly entrenched as a mid-round fantasy defenseman, with the potential for considerably more if your league values blocks, hits, and plus-minus rating.
Weegar set a new career high in points (18) despite skating in only 45 games last year. The 26-year-old has developed into a solid top-four option for the Panthers, primarily for his defensive skills rather than his scoring. Weegar had 76 hits and 71 blocked shots last season while skating 20:07 per game. He won't have much value in standard fantasy formats, but his usage and reliable non-scoring contributions could make Weegar a valuable depth option in deeper formats. He's also not afraid to mix things up, so he'll provide a PIM boost while not tanking the plus-minus category.
Weegar made a nice leap forward last season, but he'll need another one to work his way onto the fantasy radar. After recording eight points and 32 PIM in 60 games during 2017-18, the 2013 seventh-rounder climbed to 15 points and 64 PIM in 64 games. The rough stuff is nice for leagues that count PIM, but it's not hard to find comparable contributors in that category who offer significantly more offensive punch. Unless Weegar demonstrates some previously dormant scoring touch from the blue line, he'll continue to be an afterthought.
Florida's 2013 seventh-round (206th overall) draft pick blossomed into a full-time NHLer last season, but Weegar managed only two goals, six assists and a plus-5 rating over 60 games. The Canadian is physical but doesn't receive enough ice time (14:34 in 2017-18) to warrant fantasy attention outside of deep leagues.
