Placed on unconditional waivers
Vlasic was put on unconditional waivers by the Sharks on Thursday for the purposes of buying out the final year of his contract, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
ANALYSIS
Vlasic signed an eight-year, $56 million contract in July of 2017. He saw action in 27 games during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring once and adding two assists, missing the first three months of the season with back problems. Vlasic could play for another NHL team next season but at the age of 38, it will likely be in a limited role.

At his height, Vlasic was a great defensive defenseman who could also chip in offensively. At the age of 37, though, Vlasic is far removed from his glory days and now isn't even a sure thing to play regularly on the third pairing. He ended up making 57 appearances with the Sharks last season, recording six goals, 12 points, 26 PIM, 35 hits and 108 blocked shots while averaging a 16:17 of ice time. He might have another campaign with over 100 blocks in him, but Vlasic shouldn't be expected to make noteworthy contributions in any other category in 2024-25.

Open to playing in Europe
Vlasic is open to continuing his playing career overseas in Europe after being bought out by the Sharks this offseason, Max Miller of NHL.com reports Saturday.
ANALYSIS
After a 19-year career spent exclusively with the Sharks, Vlasic was bought out of the final season of his eight-year, $56 million contract in June. The 38-year-old has already expressed his desire to continue playing in the NHL to prove he still has some good play left in him. However, he is also willing to play overseas if an opportunity in North America does not materialize. He has appeared in 1,323 regular-season games at the NHL level and ranks first on the all-time list with 2,184 blocked shots.
