Benning quietly had a pretty nice season in his first year with the Sharks, posting new career-best marks in assists (23), points (24), blocked shots (125) and average time on ice (19:47 in 77 games). Benning also finished with an ugly minus-18 rating, which isn't surprising considering the minutes he logged for one of the NHL's worst teams. With Erik Karlsson since dealt to Pittsburgh, there's a real chance Benning's usage could increase 2023-24 given San Jose's lack of better options. If the 29-year-old ends up quarterbacking the top power-play unit, he could have some appeal in deep fantasy formats.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Might be traded again
Benning, who was acquired by Toronto from San Jose in a trade that sent Timothy Liljegren to the Sharks on Wednesday, might be flipped by the Maple Leafs, per Nick Barden of The Hockey News on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Benning has no points, nine hits and 10 blocked shots in seven outings with the Sharks this season. The Maple Leafs wanted to move Liljegren because they didn't have a spot for him in their top six, and he's in the first season of a two-year, $6 million contract. Benning comes with a $1.25 million cap hit for each of the next two campaigns, so the Leafs freed some cap space with the trade, but they don't necessarily need Benning either, especially with blueliner Jani Hakanpaa getting close to returning from a knee injury. The Maple Leafs also have Calle Jarnkrok, Connor Dewar and Dakota Mermis on long-term injured reserve, so Toronto might find itself with a roster logjam. Trading Benning could help alleviate some of that, so if the Maple Leafs can find a team interested in acquiring him in exchange for a pick or prospect, it wouldn't be surprising to see Toronto make that move.
