2025 Fantasy Outlook
The emergence of Lane Hutson led to a halving of Matheson's offense in 2024-25, as he put up 31 points in 80 contests compared to 62 points in a career year in 2023-24. Matheson found success when cast in a larger role, and he's still a key part of the Canadiens' defense, but that 62-point season is likely to always stand out as an aberration. Looking forward, Matheson can be counted on for top-four minutes, and he is a virtual lock to be among the league's best shot-blockers as well. Montreal's continued growth as a team should also help his plus-minus rating while keeping his scoring steady. However, at 31 years old, expecting anything more than 10 goals and 35-40 points is asking too much. He does enough to be rostered in most fantasy formats, but he won't be your leading blueliner. Garners assist in shootout loss
Matheson logged an assist, three shots on goal and four blocked shots in Sunday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Penguins.
ANALYSIS
Matheson recently missed two games due to an upper-body injury, and this was his second contest back in the lineup. He's immediately stepped back into a massive role on the top pairing, so it's safe to assume he's close to 100 percent. The defenseman has been a pleasant surprise this season with 17 points, 43 shots on net, 73 blocks, 23 hits, 18 PIM and a plus-10 rating over 34 outings, though he has just three helpers over his last 13 appearances.

In terms of offensive production, Matheson had by far his best campaign in 2023-24. He supplied 11 goals and 62 points across 82 contests to shatter his previous career high of 34 points. The 30-year-old's surge was led in large part by his success with the man advantage -- he had 28 power-play points last year after having never recorded more than nine in any previous campaign. The Canadiens didn't change much over the summer, so Matheson is a safe bet to maintain his role on the top power-play unit, and if anything, that might be an even more lucrative position this year thanks to Montreal's core forwards continued development. So even though it might be tempting to assume Matheson will see a drop off after such a big jump in production this late into his career, his circumstances are likely to keep him above the 50-point mark in 2024-25 so long as he stays healthy.
