Moritz Seider

23-Year-Old DefensemanD
Detroit Red Wings
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Through his first three NHL seasons, Seider has played in every single regular-season game, racking up 21 goals and 113 assists along the way. The minutes-eating blueliner should continue to produce at a high level and figures to be a lock for the 40-point threshold, a mark he has hit every year. With a stronger supporting cast, Seider could even be poised to set new career highs during the 2024-25 campaign, perhaps topping the 10-goal mark for the first time and pushing for 25-plus power-play points - though the addition of Erik Gustafsson could relegate Seider to the second unit. DDetroit Red Wings
March 2, 2025
Seider registered a power-play assist, two shots on goal, three hits, two blocked shots and two PIM in Saturday's 5-3 Stadium Series loss to the Blue Jackets.
ANALYSIS
Seider has a goal and four assists over nine contests since the start of February. The 23-year-old defenseman continues to play massive minutes in all situations for the Red Wings, and even when his offense falters, he offers steady physical play. For the season, the blueliner has five goals, 36 points, 119 shots on net, 162 hits, 135 blocked shots and a minus-4 rating over 60 appearances. He's on pace to do better than the back-to-back 42-point campaigns he's put together, but Seider would need to pick up the pace to match his 50-point rookie season.

Seider hit the ground running during his rookie year, posting seven goals and 50 points en route to the Calder Trophy. He slipped to five goals and 42 points last season, but led Detroit with 190 blocked shots and 207 hits. The 22-year-old has quickly established himself as the top defender on the Red Wings as well as a valuable multi-category fantasy performer. Seider should be able to get back over the 50-point plateau in 2023-24 following the offseason addition of Alex DeBrincat, who will provide the power play of the Red Wings with a lift.
Seider's Calder Trophy-winning 2021-22 campaign was one for the ages. Playing nearly the entire regular season at age 20, Seider appeared in all 82 games for Detroit, posting seven goals and 50 points. He added 187 shots on goal and averaged 23:03 of ice time per game, including a whopping 2:53 with the man advantage. To give you an idea how effective Seider was, the Red Wings were a dreadful team last season and Seider still finished with only a minus-9 rating, a remarkable number considering how much playing time he received. Detroit added a bunch of quality players this summer in hopes of lengthening their roster, so it's certainly possible Seider's production may actually increase this coming season. He isn't going to last long on draft day.
With the goal of having him play a ton of minutes against decent competition, Detroit loaned Seider to Rogle of the SHL a season ago where he proceeded to post seven goals and 28 points in 41 games. The big German has shown more offensive ability than anyone expected when he was drafted No. 6 overall in 2019, and Seider now has the look of a two-way workhorse who can contribute consistently at both ends of the rink. Seider won't turn 21 years of age until April, but he has nothing left to learn or prove in the minors and the Red Wings are going to give him every opportunity to seize a full-time role in training camp.
Seider impressed in his first season with AHL Grand Rapids, notching 22 points in 49 contests. The sixth overall pick from the 2019 draft, Seider has the potential to join the growing ranks of German stars in the NHL. The 19-year-old certainly appears to have the scoring touch to do so, and his defensive skill set isn't bad, either. He's currently on loan in Europe ahead of NHL training camps getting underway, but he'll be in the mix for a spot on the Opening Night roster. While it wouldn't be surprising to see Seider spend another year in the minors, dynasty managers will want to acquire his services -- it's now or never in such formats. He's more of a wait-and-see player in redraft leagues, but he should make an impact within the next couple of years.

Deal forthcoming?
DDetroit Red Wings
September 17, 2024
Sieder and the Red Wings appear to be making progress on a new contract after general manager Steve Yzerman told reporters Tuesday, "I don't think we're terribly far apart," per Max Bultman of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Sieder is running out of time to get a new deal figured out before the start of training camp -- though Detroit's first preseason game isn't until Sept 25 against Chicago. Even if Seider misses some training camp, he should still be capable of reaching the 40-point threshold, a mark he has hit in each of his three NHL seasons.
