2024 Fantasy Outlook
After finding success in the KHL, including the 2023-24 campaign in which he scored 11 goals and 35 points in 42 regular-season games with Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo, Kovalenko joined the Avalanche organization, logging two goals and four points across six AHL games between the regular season and playoffs last year. Kovalenko will be in the fight for a middle-six spot with the Avalanche during training camp, and given the success he's had overseas coupled with the absence of Valeri Nichushkin (suspension) until mid-November, it's worth keeping a close eye on him. The 24-year-old Kovalenko has the potential to record over 40 points under the right circumstances next year but keep in mind that assuming he'll have that level of success is risky, especially because not everyone who does well in the KHL can make the transition to North American hockey. Scores in second game back from IR
RWSan Jose Sharks
March 9, 2025
Kovalenko scored a power-play goal and added four PIM in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Islanders.
ANALYSIS
Kovalenko was playing in his second game back after missing nine contests due to an upper-body injury. While he got the Sharks on the board in the second period with a power-play tally, his second penalty of the game led to the Islanders' fourth goal. Kovalenko shouldn't have trouble sticking in the lineup for the remainder of the season, but he'll likely be in a bottom-six role. He's at six goals, 17 points, 41 shots on net, 69 hits and a minus-8 rating over 47 appearances between the Sharks and the Avalanche this season.

Close to returning
RWSan Jose Sharks
March 3, 2025
Kovalenko, who is on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, might be ready to play during the Sharks' three-game road trip, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports Monday.
ANALYSIS
Kovalenko's potential return seems to have been sparked by San Jose's decision to put Walker Duehr on waivers. In order to suit up, the 25-year-old Kovalenko will need to be activated off injured reserve, with a corresponding move creating a roster spot. His upper-body injury has kept him out of the lineup for the Sharks' last seven games and likely will keep him sidelined versus Toronto on Monday.
