Phil Di Giuseppe

Phil Di Giuseppe

31-Year-Old Left WingLW
Vancouver Canucks
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Di Giuseppe began last season as a regular for the Canucks, appearing in each of the club's first 24 games, but by the end of the year he was in and out of the lineup. All told, PDG managed just five goals and 10 points in 51 games. Di Giuseppe has consistently displayed an ability to serve as a solid No. 13 forward for an NHL team, but his inability to lock down a full-time role is the reason he's bounced between four different organizations. Vancouver's decision to add Kiefer Sherwood and Daniel Sprong in free agency doesn't bode well for Di Giuseppe's chances of earning a significant role. Read Past Outlooks

Grabs helper Saturday
LWVancouver Canucks
December 21, 2024
Di Giuseppe registered an assist, three hits and two PIM in Saturday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Senators.
ANALYSIS
Di Giuseppe has a helper and eight hits over two NHL appearances this season. Head coach Rick Tocchet has plugged the 31-year-old forward right into a top-six role at even strength. Di Giuseppe's style is to be a heavy hitter who can chip in a little depth offense, but if he falters, Nils Hoglander or Max Sasson could get back into the lineup. Don't expect Di Giuseppe to score regularly enough to be an option in fantasy.

Di Giuseppe has never played in more than 49 games in a season, and he'll face an uphill battle in competition with the Canucks' wing prospects in 2023-24. The forward did well in his first season with the team, picking up 12 points in 30 games while averaging a career-best 14:34 of ice time per contest in a middle-six role. That earned him a two-year contract extension, though it's also a two-way deal, which makes it easier to bury him in the minors if his performance slips. He's got a solid physical edge with nearly two hits per game, but he's unlikely to score enough to be a factor in fantasy.
Di Giussepe has bounced between the AHL and NHL levels in his career, totaling 15 goals and 30 assists in 170 NHL appearances over the past five seasons. He's good enough to fill in capably when injuries strike, but Di Giussepe will likely be stuck in a bottom-six role when he plays, especially since the Rangers are deepest at his position of left wing, with Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider and first overall pick Alexis Lefreniere all on the roster.
In 2017-18, Di Giuseppe once again spent most of the season splitting time between the AHL and NHL. He played in just 49 games for the Hurricanes, registering five goals (including one game-winner) and eight assists. In June, the Canes re-signed him to a one-year, one-way $750,000 contract, which means you should see Di Giuseppe spend a full season at the top level in 2018-19. He is still likely to be situated in a bottom-six role, however, so don't expect a huge offensive surge. A 20-point season is well within his reach.
Di Giuseppe, who re-signed with the Hurricanes on a one-year, two-way contract in July, spent most of last season shuttling between the NHL and AHL. He was pretty effective in the minors with 28 points in 40 games for AHL Charlotte, but played only a part-time, checking-line role with Carolina, notching just seven points in 36 games. The 23-year-old winger will likely once again split time between the Canes and Checkers in 2017-18, keeping him from being a viable option in season-long fantasy leagues
Di Giuseppe enjoyed a solid rookie season in 2015-16, scoring seven goals and 10 assists in 41 games. He was originally used in a checking-line capacity when he was first called up in December, but it wasn't long before Di Giuseppe crept his way onto a scoring line with Victor Rask and Jeff Skinner, skating as much as 16-to-18 minutes per night in March before an injury cut his season short. A healthy Di Giuseppe is expected to compete for a similar role on the Canes' roster when training camps open in September. In deeper fantasy formats, his 40-point upside makes him a solid late-round value.
