Casey got his first taste of NHL action in 2024-25 and showed promise, recording four goals, eight points, 12 shots, 10 hits and seven blocks across 14 regular-season outings. He also had three goals and 18 points in 30 regular-season appearances with AHL Utica. The 21-year-old has the potential to develop into a good offensive defenseman, but there might not be a spot for him on New Jersey’s Opening Night roster, and it’s even harder to project him to get significant power-play ice time so long as both Dougie Hamilton and Luke Hughes are available. For those reasons, it’d be risky to expect big things out of Casey in 2025-26, but he is certainly worth keeping a close eye on. Read Past Outlooks

Casey posted his first multi-point effort of the AHL campaign. He's now at seven assists, 25 shots on net and a minus-1 rating over 11 appearances. The 21-year-old defenseman also saw action in two NHL games earlier in the season, but he went minus-3 and failed to earn a point. His future is bright, but he'll need to show a lot more with the Comets to earn another call-up.

Coach Sheldon Keefe has been impressed by Casey's "ability to make the right plays and pick his spots well." The 20-year-old Casey had seven goals and 45 points in 40 appearances with the University of Michigan last season. He was selected by the Devils with the No. 46 overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. With Luke Hughes sidelined due to a shoulder injury, there might be a spot on the second power-play unit for Casey.
