Liljegren couldn't crack the lineup much with the Maple Leafs early in 2024-25, but a trade to the Sharks in late October opened more opportunities for him. He was in the lineup most of the time the rest of the way, earning 17 points over 67 appearances while seeing some power-play time. Liljegren's defensive flaws were on display, as he posted a minus-25 rating, but he can still chip in over 100 blocked shots with decent playing time. There are fair criticisms to be had about Liljegren's playing style, but it works for him. Despite seeing just 55 games for the Maple Leafs last year, he produced 23 points, 92 hits and 116 blocked shots while averaging a career-best 19:40 of ice time. Liljegren may continue to work on the second power-play unit, where he had seven of his 20 assists in 2023-24. Injuries have often cropped up to limit Liljegren's effectiveness over a full season, but he's productive in bursts. He will still have to earn his place in the lineup, as Toronto continues to go with quantity over quality on defense, though Liljegren should have the inside track to a third-pairing role.
