2024 Fantasy Outlook
The Sharks knew from the start of the 2023-24 campaign that they weren't going to make the playoffs, so they kept an eye on the future, giving the young Eklund key minutes. The 21-year-old had 16 goals and 45 points across 80 contests. While playing for San Jose did result in him getting a lot of ice time, it also meant that the quality of his linemates wasn't great. Perhaps because of that, Eklund never got to settle in with anyone in particular, instead being thrown onto the ice with a rotating group of forwards. Those are issues that might be resolved this year with Logan Couture likely to be healthy and top prospect Macklin Celebrini set to make his NHL debut, leaving Eklund with far better players to work with. That assignment, combined with his own growth should lead to Eklund finishing with 50-60 points in 2024-25. Read Past Outlooks

Undergoes surgery on wrist
LWSan Jose Sharks
Wrist
May 5, 2025
Eklund underwent successful wrist surgery Monday, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports.
ANALYSIS
After a scary incident Saturday in which his wrist was cut by a skate in an exhibition contest ahead of the 2025 IIHF World Championship, Eklund will now be on the road to recovery. The 2021 first-round pick is set to miss the international tournament with Team Sweden, but he is expected to be ready for training camp in 2025-26. Peng noted that Eklund's recovery timeline is roughly three months. The 22-year-old Eklund took a step forward in his second full season with the Sharks, earning 17 goals and 58 points over 77 appearances. The left-shot winger's plus-minus rating also improved from minus-45 in 2023-24 to minus-7 in 2024-25, which highlights his progression on both ends of the ice.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Playing the entirety of last season at age 20, Eklund spent the majority of the year in the AHL, where he was excellent (17 goals, 41 points in 54 games). He added two goals and a helper in three games with the Sharks. The former No. 7 overall pick back in 2021, Eklund remains the most valuable long-term asset in the San Jose system outside of (2023 No. 4 overall pick) Will Smith. Eklund seems certain to grab a full-time gig for the upcoming season, making him a deep-league option in re-draft formats and a high-end asset in keeper/dynasty leagues.

Still listed on Sweden's roster
LWSan Jose Sharks
May 5, 2025
Eklund, who is dealing with a wrist injury, is still listed on Team Sweden's roster for the 2025 IIHF World Championship, Max Miller of NHL.com reports Monday.
ANALYSIS
Eklund's wrist was cut by a skate during a tune-up game Saturday, calling his status for the upcoming international tournament into question. He was in stable condition after the incident and downplayed the severity of the issue on social media. It's encouraging that he's still listed on Sweden's roster, but he'll presumably continue to be monitored as the tournament approaches.
