Yaroslav Askarov

Yaroslav Askarov

22-Year-Old GoalieG
San Jose Sharks
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Askarov is the best goaltending prospect in pro hockey and his time will come, which could be in 2024-25 after he was acquired by the Sharks in a trade from Nashville. He has it all - elite skills, incredible feet and extraordinary quickness and athleticism. It certainly wasn't the backstop's skills that saw him shipped off the San Jose. The Preds are a team with cup aspirations and signed starter Juuse Saros to an eight-year extension. Askarov could be in contention for the starting job alongside Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek. It likely will take most of training camp for a decision to be made, so Askarov may need to be on your draft radar. Read Past Outlooks
$Signed a two-year, $4 million contract extension with the Sharks in August of 2024.
Allows four goals in loss
GSan Jose Sharks
January 20, 2025
Askarov stopped 27 of 31 shots in a 6-3 loss to Boston on Monday. The Bruins' fifth and sixth goals of the game were empty-netters.
ANALYSIS
The Sharks had a 3-2 lead after two periods, but two goals by Charlie Coyle in the third frame put Boston in the driver's seat. Despite suffering from an illness, the 22-year-old Askarov was the backup behind Alexandar Georgiev in Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Islanders. Askarov has lost his last two outings to drop to 3-4-2 this season, but he still has a 2.58 GAA and a .912 save percentage.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely headed back to minors
GSan Jose Sharks
November 25, 2024
Askarov will probably be sent back to AHL San Jose eventually, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports Monday.
ANALYSIS
According to Pashelka, the move to demote Askarov will likely come once Nico Strum, who is out with an upper-body injury, is ready to be activated off injured reserve, which will make keeping three goaltenders more difficult. Additionally, the Sharks probably don't want the 22-year-old Askarov just sitting in the press box or on the bench, so a move back to the minors would afford him more chances to play.
