Not competitive in Nashville loss
HeavyweightUFC
July 12, 2025
Lane lost to Vitor Petrino via submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:16 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Nashville.
ANALYSIS
A former NFL player that has never learned the finer points of MMA, Lane is going to struggle in anything other than a short brawl. Going up against a legitimate explosive athlete like Petrino who has both a reasonable ground game and legitimate power is a recipe for disaster. This fight was over the second Lane gave up an early takedown. He was never able to work his way back to his feet, and Petrino eventually earned the submission win in his heavyweight debut. Lane will be 38 years old in November and is 1-4 (1NC) in his first six UFC bouts. There simply isn't any upside, short or long term, here.

Will take on Petrino
HeavyweightUFC
April 11, 2025
Lane will face Vitor Petrino in a heavyweight bout at UFC Nashville on July 12, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Lane is coming off a loss to Mario Pinto on March 1, so he's going to aim for a bounce-back performance. However, their recent performances haven't been very inspiring, as the veteran has dropped three of his previous four bouts.
Falls to Pinto via KO
HeavyweightUFC
March 2, 2025
Lane lost to Mario Pinto via KO (punch) at 0:39 of Round 2 at UFC Vegas 103 on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Lane is known for a kill-or-be-killed mentality, and Saturday night was no different. He got off to a fast Round 1 that included 20 significant strikes and a knockdown of his opponent, but Pinto was able to shake it off to see the final bell. He came out aggressive in Round 2 and was cautious not to punch himself out, but after another surge forward, Pinto unloaded with a right hand that sent Lane crashing to the canvas out cold. Fortunately, referee Mark Smith was able to jump in and save him before any further damage was done. Lane has now lost three of his last four, but the company needs heavyweights, especially exciting ones, so it wouldn't be surprising to see the UFC go back to the well despite recent results.
Set to fight Pinto
HeavyweightUFC
January 24, 2025
Lane will fight Mario Pinto at UFC Vegas 103 on March 1, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Lane pulled off an upset over Robelis Despaigne in October to secure his first UFC victory. However, keeping his positive momentum alive may be challenging against Pinto, who has not yet fought in the UFC but is a perfect 9-0 as a professional.
Upset win in Vegas opener
HeavyweightUFC
October 20, 2024
Lane defeated Robelis Despaigne via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Winless in his first three UFC bouts (0-2, 1NC) and almost certainly looking at a release if he came up short, Lane went out and pulled the upset as a +330 underdog, second-largest on the entire card. Austen deserves credit to tailoring his game plan to his opposition. Lane isn't a grappler by any means, but the entire world knows Despaigne can't defend a takedown, and Lane had just enough grappling and cardio in his bag to earn the decision. There's nothing to suggest this is a sign of things to come for the soon-to-be 37-year-old, but it should ensure he gets another fight with the company.
Scheduled against Despaigne
HeavyweightUFC
July 29, 2024
Lane is scheduled to compete against Robelis Despaigne in a heavyweight fight at UFC Vegas 98 on Oct. 19, per Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
Still looking for his first UFC win, Lane has at least one more chance to get one, which could be the former NFL player's last opportunity. He has been unimpressive with the fight promotion thus far, suffering knockout punches from each of his two opponents.
