Upset win in Vegas opener
HeavyweightUFC
October 20, 2024
Lane defeated Robelis Despaigne via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Winless in his first three UFC bouts (0-2, 1NC) and almost certainly looking at a release if he came up short, Lane went out and pulled the upset as a +330 underdog, second-largest on the entire card. Austen deserves credit to tailoring his game plan to his opposition. Lane isn't a grappler by any means, but the entire world knows Despaigne can't defend a takedown, and Lane had just enough grappling and cardio in his bag to earn the decision. There's nothing to suggest this is a sign of things to come for the soon-to-be 37-year-old, but it should ensure he gets another fight with the company.

Scheduled against Despaigne
HeavyweightUFC
July 29, 2024
Lane is scheduled to compete against Robelis Despaigne in a heavyweight fight at UFC Vegas 98 on Oct. 19, per Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
Still looking for his first UFC win, Lane has at least one more chance to get one, which could be the former NFL player's last opportunity. He has been unimpressive with the fight promotion thus far, suffering knockout punches from each of his two opponents.
Badly gasses out in defeat
HeavyweightUFC
April 27, 2024
Lane lost to Jhonata Diniz via KO (punches) at 2:12 of Round 2 at UFC on ESPN 55 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
You can watch this sport for an awful long time and not see a fighter gas out as bad as Lane did in this one. Austen dominated Round 1 on the strength of a takedown and top control time. Yet, the shots early in Round 2 became weaker, and Diniz managed to stay upright. From there, Lane had no shot. He absorbed a few heavy blows but nothing that appeared to be all that damaging. Truth be told, Lane was more exhausted than anything else, eventually topping over face first to the canvas, forcing referee Mark Smith to step in. Lane played in the NFL, so he's obviously an elite athlete, but he's now 36 years of age and has very little pro MMA experience. The UFC seems likely to consider moving on given how poorly his first two fights with the company have gone.
Fighting Diniz
HeavyweightUFC
January 31, 2024
Lane is scheduled to compete against Johnata Diniz in a heavyweight fight at a UFC even on April 27, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Lane and Diniz are both new fighters on the UFC scene. Lane lost his debut match against Justin Tafa back in September, and Diniz is making his UFC debut. Both fighters will look to establish themselves in the scene with a win.
Overwhelmed in UFC debut
HeavyweightUFC
September 9, 2023
Lane lost to Justin Tafa via TKO (punches) at 1:22 of Round 1 at UFC 293 on Saturday in Sydney, Australia.
ANALYSIS
These two fought in late-June, with an accidental eye poke from Lane just 29 seconds in resulting in a no contest. They ran it back here, with Austen looking just fine in his company debut until one sweeping left hand from Tafa knocked him into another dimension. Referee Jim Perdios gave Lane every chance to recover, but it simply wasn't happening. Austen is theoretically interesting because he's huge (6-foot-6), and as a former NFL player, is obviously a great athlete, but he will be 36 years of age this coming November and is miles behind where he needs to be in terms of MMA experience.
Fight with Tafa reschedule
HeavyweightUFC
July 15, 2023
Lane will fight Justin Tafa in a heavyweight bout at a UFC event on September 9, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
The original fight between Lane and Tafa was cut short after Tafa sustained an accidental poke in the eye. Lane stands six inches taller than Tafa while also sporting a six-inch reach advantage. Ultimately, the two fighters will get a second chance to fight in the upcoming UFC 293 event in September.
