Austin was the third overall pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft but flew under the radar compared to fellow rookies Rhyne Howard and NaLyssa Smith. However, Austin showed plenty of promise, appearing in every game last year and starting in 32 of her 36 outings. She faced some growing pains with inconsistent performances but was a solid source of points and rebounds, averaging 8.7 points and 6.5 rebounds in 21.6 minutes per game. The Mystics acquired Amanda Zahui B. during the offseason, but Austin's role in 2023 should remain secure, especially since Elizabeth Williams is now in Chicago. Austin has been ruled out for Games 1 and 2 of the Mystics' opening-round playoff series against the Liberty, Tyler Byrum of NBC Sports Washington reports.
ANALYSIS
This doesn't come as a major surprise, as Austin missed the final four regular-season games after aggravating a hip injury that cost her 16 straight contests earlier in the campaign. In her absence, Tianna Hawkins, Queen Egbo and Myisha Hines-Allen will continue to play heavy minutes in Washington's frontcourt.
