Closer Watch

Orioles - Baltimore closers, past and present, have endured a taxing first two weeks of the season. While Jim Johnson, the Orioles' prime fireman prior to the current campaign, has already relinquished his gig in Oakland, Tommy Hunter is likewise tempting fate, surrendering a run in back-to-back appearances. The most recent setback of sorts went down Saturday, when he quickly handled the first two batters, before serving up a game-tying home run to the two-faced Colby Rasmus. On the other hand, Hunter's velocity has not been an issue, with his average fastball ringing in at 95.8 mph in 2014, affording him time to hone in his command. If further problems persist, though, Darren O'Day (no earned runs and a 3:1 K:BB in four frames) is waiting in the wings to manage the ninth.

Athletics - The aforementioned Johnson faltered in spectacular fashion with his new club, allowing multiple runs three times in his first five contests. His subsequent removal from the role paved the way for a trio of relievers (Ryan Cook, Sean Doolittle, and Luke Gregerson) to show their worth, but not before Johnson twirled two scoreless innings, while racking up four strikeouts, in a non-save situation Friday. The remainder of the weekend series was a different story altogether, as Gregerson was entrusted with the save chance Saturday, followed by Doolittle on Sunday, both of which they converted. Interestingly enough, each pitcher picked up the hold during the other's moment of glory, leaving a muddled picture for owners to wait out until one nails down the job.

Recommended Pickup

Adeiny Hechavarria, SS, MIA - Shuttled about the Marlins' lineup this season, Hechavarria has brushed off the lack of consistency, reaching base two or more times in six of 13 games. Despite leading off slightly more than one third of his plate appearances this year, he has nonetheless displayed supreme comfort in the seventh and eighth spots in the order, batting a combined .448 (13-for-29) with one triple, two doubles, three RBI, five runs scored, and a 2:4 BB:K. Because his line on the season (.353/.370/.451) is nothing to frown at, either, it's curious that he's rostered in a mere 30 percent of ESPN formats. Perhaps there's a sprinkling of Miami bias at play, but owners should note that the Marlins haven't been asleep at the wheel offensively in 2014, ranking 11th in the majors with 4.62 runs per contest. As a result, there's little reason why Hechavarria shouldn't have a roster spot universally secured, let alone residing on the waiver wire of most leagues.
