Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
After working exclusively as a starter during his 2022 rookie season, Brieske has morphed into a useful swing man for the Tigers the last two seasons. In 2024, he made 46 appearances, which included 12 starts as an opener, and he logged 67.2 innings overall. Brieske posted a solid 3.59 ERA and struck out 69 batters. The righty also managed six holds, four wins and a save in his hybrid role. While Brieske's ability to cover multiple innings out of the bullpen or as a starter is valuable for Detroit, his lack of a regular starting spot does limit his fantasy ceiling to some degree. The 26-year-old could potentially make his way back into the rotation at some point, as the Tigers have several unproven options outside of staff ace Tarik Skubal. Until that happens, Brieske will remain difficult to count on for consistent production out of the bullpen, unless of course he starts seeing more save opportunities in a higher-leverage relief role. Should be in mix for saves
Brieske has given up four runs with a 5:1 K:BB over six innings during spring training, and he is expected to be an option to close out games for manager A.J. Hinch this season.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander recorded just one save during the regular season last year but recorded two more in the playoffs as he finished the year as one of Hinch's most-trusted relievers. Including the postseason, Brieske had a 1.91 ERA across his final 37.2 frames in 2024, priming him to fill a high-leverage role this year. Hinch isn't officially expected to name a closer in the near future, but Brieske, Tyler Holton and Jason Foley should be the main options for saves, with Foley being the early favorite after recording 28 saves during the regular season last year.

Several job battles have been settled around the American League, including the Royals' fifth starter job, which appears to have been won by Kris Bubic.

Todd Zola tries to remove volume from the equation when determining the value of pitchers, and finds that the market may have over-corrected on Logan Webb.

Plenty of starting spots are available in the AL Central this spring, including a pair at the back of the Tigers' rotation, where Jackson Jobe seems to have a pretty clear path.
2023 Fantasy Outlook
With Detroit dealing with a number of rotation injuries in 2022, Brieske emerged as a surprisingly solid starter, though he was also shut down in July with forearm soreness. The 24-year-old made his MLB debut in late April and proceeded to record a 4.19 ERA and 1.20 WHIP across 81.2 innings. He only had 54 strikeouts, so his ceiling might not be very high unless he can start missing more bats moving forward. Heading into 2023, the Detroit rotation is still in flux. Eduardo Rodriguez missed a good chunk of time last year, but he figures to be the Opening Day starter. Matt Manning should also slot into the rotation along with Spencer Turnbull, who missed all of 2022 due to Tommy John surgery. However, Casey Mize could miss most or all of 2023 due to his own Tommy John surgery, and Tarik Skubal is out for a while following flexor tendon surgery in August. That should put Brieske in a position to start, though he'll likely have to generate more strikeouts to get the attention of fantasy managers.
