Back with Cubs on minors deal
Marquez (shoulder) signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Tuesday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Marquez is just 23 years old and once had a fair amount of prospect hype, but he's made just a single competitive appearance across the last three years. He made his big-league debut in 2020 but has otherwise not pitched above the High-A level, as he's battled shoulder troubles for the last two seasons. The Cubs non-tendered him back in November, but he'll return to the organization on a minor-league deal. That presumably means the Cubs still think he has some promise, but whether or not he'll be healthy enough to help the team any time soon remains to be seen.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
Marquez, the Cubs' top pitching prospect, made a surprise big-league debut on the final day of the regular season, giving up five runs while recording two outs. The 6-foot-4 southpaw was rewarded for a strong showing at the alternate site, where he worked on refining his offspeed pitches and improving his command/control. On pure velocity, his fastball stacks up against any lefty in pro ball, sitting in the upper-90s and touching triple digits. His slider and changeup improved at the alternate site, as they have in each of the past couple seasons, and he developed a show-me curveball. Like with most young pitchers who throw this hard, the two big things that will determine Marquez's career path are health and command. His command will need to improve for him to remain a starter, and odds are he will need Tommy John surgery at some point. He should head to Double-A this season.
