2023 Fantasy Outlook
Rodriguez missed the entire 2022 season after undergoing capsule repair surgery in his right shoulder in November. It was the third campaign that the right-hander has missed all or most of since he was drafted in November of 2016 -- he sat out all of 2018 due to a back injury and tossed only 9.1 innings in 2019 before undergoing season-ending back surgery. Rodriguez reportedly blew away team personnel at the alternate training site in 2020, but there are no numbers to back that up since the minor-league campaign was wiped out by the Covid-19 pandemic. There is nonetheless lots to like about Rodriguez's future prospects, as he possesses four potentially plus-pitches highlighted by a mid-to-high-90s sinker and a mid-80s curveball. During his first stint in the majors in 2021, Rodriguez went to the pair of offerings nearly 90% of the time to promising results (3.64 ERA, 21.6 K% over 29.2 innings), but he also has a slider and changeup that he could work in as they become more refined. There's a strong belief within the organization that Rodriguez could be a top-of-the-rotation starter if he can get past his health issues. He's still only 24 and is expected to be ready for spring training, but the Angels may elect to deploy him as a reliever while he works his arm back into shape. Read Past Outlooks

Throws live batting practice
Rodriguez (shoulder) threw a 20-pitch live batting practice session Tuesday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It was the right-hander's first time facing hitters since August of 2021, as he wound up having right shoulder surgery that November and has faced a long rehab process. Rodriguez was one of the Angels' better young arms prior to the operation, but it remains to be seen how the 24-year-old's stuff will bounce back. He'll begin the season on the injured list and it's unclear when he might be game-ready.

2021 Fantasy Outlook
Rodriguez's stuff stacks up with the best pitching prospects in the game, but he hasn't been able to showcase it in recent seasons. A back injury wiped out his 2018 season and he made just three starts in 2019 before needing season-ending back surgery. What should have been a widely-witnessed breakout campaign in 2020 was only seen by team personnel at the alternate training site and opposing scouts in the fall instructional league, but reports suggest he was even better than advertised. He made 10 starts at the alternate site before heading to instructs, totaling around 70 innings on the season and accomplishing his top goal of building his workload while remaining healthy. Rodriguez compliments a mid-90s fastball (touches 98) with a slider and changeup that are easy plus offerings and an above-average curveball. He also has average or better command. He could be a No. 1 starter if he stays healthy.
