Eli White

30-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Atlanta Braves
2025 Fantasy Outlook
White sports 96th percentile sprint speed, but his approach at the plate is non-ideal. He should be putting the ball in play on the ground, but instead he swings from his heels, lofting fly balls between far too many strikeouts. To be fair, last season White recorded an improved 22.1 percent strikeout rate and 40.4 percent ground ball clip with Triple-A Gwinnett. If he were five years younger, there would be reason for optimism, but he's entering his 31-year-old season. White can play everywhere but first base and catcher, but he'll still be challenged to break camp with a loaded Atlanta roster. Read Past Outlooks

White will spend most of spring training working as an infielder in an attempt to win a roster spot as a super-utility player, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old is out of minor-league options, and adding some positional versatility should help his bid for a roster spot with Atlanta in need of a utility infielder. White has four appearances at second base as a big leaguer but has otherwise exclusively played the outfield, though he did see infield action earlier in his baseball career.

Stat Review
How does Eli White compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate

White failed to impress offensively in 202 with a .567 OPS during his first extended look in the big leagues, and he delivered similar results in 47 games last year. Texas decided it had seen enough to remove him from the 40-man roster in December, and he was subsequently traded to Atlanta. His new club doesn't have a clear No. 1 option in left field with Eddie Rosario coming off a poor campaign, but veteran options like Kevin Pillar, Jordan Luplow and Sam Hilliard likely have the upper hand at a spot on the Opening Day roster behind Rosario. White isn't likely to serve as more than organizational depth for Atlanta in 2023.
White looks to be healthy again after his 2021 season came to an end in early August, when he suffered a right elbow strain that later required an internal brace surgery. A one-time intriguing prospect, the 27-year-old White hasn't done much against big-league pitching since making his debut in 2020, owing a career .179/.254/.293 slash line. He'll compete for a reserve outfield and DH role this spring. White is a player to keep in mind for AL-only drafts because he has a minor-league track record of accepting walks and stealing bases.
White is a player to keep in mind for AL-only drafts because he has a minor-league track record of accepting walks and stealing bases. He does not have much power, but had double-digit steals in each of his last four seasons in the minor leagues and his sprint speed at the big-league level in 2020 graded out in the 98th percentile. The problem for him is that he could not steal first for Texas, and went 9-for-48 on the season with three walks and 16 strikeouts. White has had issues with contact since leaving Double-A baseball. In an ideal world for Texas, White is David Dahl's platoon partner and a pinch runner in the later innings, but that kind of role would obviously cap his upside. Consider using a reserve-round pick in deep formats to see how things shake out for Texas.
White has improved his stock considerably since being taken in the 11th round in 2016. That said, he's still only a fringe player for dynasty leagues. Last season was his best yet, with White hitting over .300 with 18 stolen bases and a 132 wRC+ in 130 games with Double-A Midland. However, those numbers are less impressive when considering a) he was 24 years old for most of the season b) he was caught on the basepaths nine times and c) he had just a .145 ISO. His defensive home is likely second base. After White made 92 appearances at shortstop in 2017, he played in just 42 games at the position last season. Perhaps he will get a chance to continue on at shortstop after being traded to the Rangers in the offseason as part of the return for Jurickson Profar. At the very least the trade affords White a much better future home ballpark and a quicker path to the big leagues. He could find his way to the majors at some point late in the year.

Adjusting hitting mechanics
OFAtlanta Braves
February 21, 2023
White made an effort to clean up his hitting mechanics over the offseason, per Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
ANALYSIS
White reworked both his hand path and bat path, trying to keep more of a straight line to the ball. He's hoping that the adjustments will help him carve out at least a share of the available playing time in left field with Atlanta. The 28-year-old has typically posted solid numbers at the plate in the minor leagues, but he holds a weak .185/.260/.296 career batting line in 130 major-league games.
