2025 Fantasy Outlook
Rodriguez remains one of the top power-hitting prospects in the minors, but strikeouts are still a big part of the equation and durability is becoming a potential pitfall. The 21-year-old lefty-hitting outfielder suffered a hand injury on an attempted steal in late-April and then landed on the IL with a thumb sprain in early-June. It's unclear if those two injuries were related, but he aggravated the thumb injury during his initial rehab assignment and re-injured it shortly after getting a September promotion to Triple-A. All told, Rodriguez played 47 games, with 37 of those coming at Double-A. He slashed .274/.455/.561 with nine home runs, nine steals, a 24.4 percent walk rate, a 29.7 percent strikeout rate and a 60.5 percent contact rate. Rodriguez isn't a great athlete, but he manages to make plays in the outfield and on the bases. Rodriguez has some similarities to Matt Wallner and Trevor Larnach, so it's unclear when he'll break through for the Twins, although he is already on the 40-man roster. If Rodriguez can play 100-plus games for the first time in his career, that would qualify as a successful 2025 season, as there may be some understandable growing pains in his first lengthy exposure to Triple-A and big-league pitching. Rodriguez recently underwent surgery to repair a ligament tear in his right thumb, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey indicated Wednesday it was a cleanup procedure that Rodriguez had and the expectation is the young outfielder will be ready for spring training. Rodriguez was limited to just 47 games in 2024 due to the nagging thumb issue. The 21-year-old ended the season at Triple-A St. Paul and is already on the 40-man roster, so he could push to debut in 2025.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Known heading into 2023 as one of the most alluring sluggers in the lower minors, Rodriguez essentially treaded water at High-A. His 16 home runs, .223 ISO and 36.5 Hard% were at or maybe slightly below expectations over 99 games, and his 29.5 percent strikeout rate did nothing to lessen long-term hit tool concerns. He hit .287 with a 26.5 percent strikeout rate in 42 games after the All-Star break while maintaining an elite 21.4 percent walk rate, so there were signs of improvements down the stretch. Until further notice, Rodriguez projects as a three-true-outcomes slugger who will be better in OBP leagues than batting average leagues and could run into a wall against upper-level pitchers who can locate and throw multiple offerings for strikes. Unlike most corner-outfield sluggers, Rodriguez has enough speed to steal double-digit bases early in his career. He can handle center field in a pinch and has a plus arm that would fit well in right field. Rodriguez is already on the 40-man roster, but he probably won't be big-league ready until sometime in 2025.
Among legitimate prospects, nobody hit the ball hard more regularly than Rodriguez last season, as his 50.0 Hard% and 10.0 Soft% are elite marks that were generally only matched by big leaguers on rehab assignments. This is what 80-grade raw power looks like. Unfortunately, Rodriguez needed season-ending knee surgery after slashing .272/.492/.551 with nine home runs, a 28.6 BB% and a 26.1 K% in 47 games at Single-A. The big question going forward will be what kind of strikeout rates Rodriguez logs against High-A and Double-A pitching. His contact in the zone was fringe-average and he was too passive, but he also rarely chased bad pitches. It's possible that Rodriguez develops into a cleanup hitter who is regularly near the top of Statcast leaderboards, and it's also possible he is more of a three-true-outcome type who hits fifth or sixth due to a propensity to strike out.

Should debut in 2025
OFMinnesota Twins  AAA
November 27, 2024
Twins GM Jeremy Zoll said on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM that Rodiguez "will have a real chance to contribute" in the majors in 2025.
ANALYSIS
The 21-year-old, who is recovering from thumb surgery, is one of the organization's top prospects and received a promotion to Triple-A St. Paul late in 2024. Rodriguez missed much of the season due to the thumb injury and had a 1.026 OPS across 47 minor-league games. Trevor Larnach and Matt Wallner have yet to show they can be relied upon to consistently produce in the majors, which could provide a window for Rodriguez in 2025.
