2023 Fantasy Outlook
The Tigers, in evaluation mode, called Carpenter up from Triple-A Toledo after the All-Star break. His strikeout rate more than doubled with the jump in levels (to 28.3%), but he totaled 11 extra-base hits -- including six homers -- in 113 plate appearances for a .485 SLG. Small sample warning: Carpenter was 26% better than league average by wRC+. As a 19th-round pick in 2019, Carpenter faced long odds to reach the majors. He's even on the fantasy radar now albeit primarily in deeper leagues as most managers will need to see more. The walk rate was low at 5.3% and his playing-time outlook will remain hazy until things play out in spring training. Carpenter wouldn't be completely out of place on a sleeper list, but with the plate skills he displayed in the majors last year, he could fizzle as quickly as he made the splash. Read Past Outlooks

Playing outfield on rehab
Carpenter (shoulder) is making his first start in the outfield Wednesday since starting his rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Carpenter has been limited to designated hitter duty as he works his way back from a right shoulder strain, but he's been throwing and is now ready to try things out in the outfield. The 25-year-old has been on the shelf since late April but should be activated soon as long as he shows he can handle the outfield.
