2025 Fantasy Outlook
Carpenter was affected by injury in 2024 for the second year in a row, this time missing almost three months of action with a lumbar spine stress fracture. He had collected a .914 OPS before getting hurt and didn't miss a beat after returning, putting up a .954 OPS and 10 home runs over his final 133 plate appearances before adding another homer in the playoffs. Carpenter again stood out for his quality of contact, boasting a 46.4 percent hard-hit rate and 17.7 percent barrel rate. The 27-year-old's big bugaboo is that he can't hit left-handed pitching (.408 OPS in 2024) and rarely gets the opportunity to do so. It certainly limits how much volume he's able to provide, and that's even before factoring in Carpenter's increasing injury concerns. That said, Carpenter's 149 wRC+ versus righties since the start of 2023 is the 11th highest in baseball among players with at least 500 plate appearances. When he's in the lineup, he's going to mash. Hits IL with hamstring strain
The Tigers placed Carpenter (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday.
Analysis
Detroit manager A.J. Hinch previously said Tuesday that Carpenter was headed to the IL after he strained his right hamstring in Sunday's 3-0 win over the Twins, but after the series opener in Washington was rained out, the Tigers waited until Wednesday to make the transaction official. The Tigers recalled infielder Trey Sweeney from Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move, but Matt Vierling and Zach McKinstry are more likely to see boosts in playing time while Carpenter is on the shelf. Though Carpenter's injury is considered mild and he's eligible to return from the IL on July 11, the Tigers could wait until after the All-Star break to reinstate him.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
A 19th-round pick out of Virginia Tech in 2019, Carpenter bucked the odds by even reaching the majors. He continued to surprise in 2023 with 20 home runs, six steals and a 121 wRC+ in 459 plate appearances. The last of those 20 homers came Aug. 23 -- Carpenter went 34 games without a long ball to finish the season, slashing just .256/.313/.308 in that stretch. In addition to that disturbing trend, Carpenter managed just a .657 OPS against left-handed pitching for the season, leaving open the possibility for a strict platoon role. His overall body of work was impressive enough for Carpenter to project as a regular in Detroit between the corner outfield and DH, but it's understandable to still be skeptical, especially with the way last season ended for him. HIs home park does him no favors.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Excelling in platoon role
Carpenter has started against just one left-handed pitcher this season and has an overall slash line of .283/.342/.572 through 50 games.
Analysis
Carpenter has just 18 plate appearances against left-handed pitching this season and has gone 1-for-16 with a walk and three strikeouts. The 26-year-old has a 1.004 OPS against righties though, and he's built on a 2023 campaign that saw him club 20 homers with a .278/.340/.471 slash line. Carpenter may see a few more chances against southpaws as the season continues, but for now he's given fantasy managers plenty of production as an elite platoon bat.
