December 20, 2024
The Mets signed Ortiz (elbow) to a minor-league contract Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Ortiz will miss most, if not all, of the 2025 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery, so this is likely a two-year minor-league deal. He holds a career 4.76 ERA and 25:16 K:BB across 34 innings covering parts of five seasons at the big-league level.

How does Luis Ortiz compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB

2016
Ortiz entered last year widely considered a top-100 prospect and got off to a quick start, sitting with a 3.02 ERA after 11 starts. However, he struggled over the second half and finished the campaign with pedestrian numbers, leading to a slide down prospect lists. He allowed opposing batters to hit just .227 thanks to three quality pitches -- he owns a mid-90s fastball and mixes in a slider and changeup. However, that did not translate into quality strikeout numbers, likely because hitters were plenty willing to wait for the free pass to first base -- something he has done far too often since joining the Brewers following a midseason trade in 2016. Ortiz's pitch repertoire still gives him a chance to be a middle-of-the-rotation starter, but he is going to need better results in 2018 to reaffirm his status as a premier prospect.
David Wells, Rich Garces, Luis Tiant -- name your favorite fat pitcher, and Ortiz has probably drawn comparisons. At 6-foot-3 and generously listed at 250 pounds, Ortiz's body is the first thing most will notice about him, but get too caught up in making jokes and you'll miss him mowing down opposing lineups. He already owns a fastball that sits in the mid-90s and two secondary pitches -- a slider and a changeup -- that have flashed plus potential. At just 21 years old, Ortiz has already exhibited excellent control at multiple minor league levels as well. The total package is there, and if he can stay healthy, Ortiz should fit right into the middle of Milwaukee's rotation in a couple years or so.
Ortiz offers much and more to dream on for those who want to gamble on his staying healthy and making it as a big league starter. He has been limited to just 70.1 professional innings since being drafted with the 30th overall pick in the 2014 draft, posting a 1.79 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over that span though he has dealt with forearm and elbow issues. His delivery would never be described as “free and easy,” which may be part of the reason he can’t seem to stay healthy. On a positive note, Ortiz returned in September after missing 10 weeks with elbow inflammation, giving up just one run on three hits with nine strikeouts over seven innings (five appearances), so he should be considered healthy heading into spring training. With two plus pitches (fastball and slider) already in tow as a 20-year-old, he remains a tantalizing talent with the upside of a No. 2 starter, but he also carries more health-related risk than the typical low minors pitching prospect.
