Hot start at Triple-A
1BPittsburgh Pirates  A+
April 18, 2022
Martin is hitting .359/.375/.395 with two home runs, five doubles and three triples across 40 plate appearances at Triple-A Indianapolis.
ANALYSIS
Martin closed the 2021 campaign with a very brief stint at Triple-A Indianapolis, and he was assigned to the level to begin the 2022 season. His surface stats are extremely impressive, but he has struck out at a 30 percent clip and walked only 2.5 percent of the time. In addition, his batting average is inflated by a .480 BABIP. It's possible that Martin gets a look in Pittsburgh at some point in the coming months, but he is not on the 40-man roster and the team has several viable options at first base.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2020
2018
A 20-year-old first baseman who bats left-handed and throws right-handed, Martin is a pretty classic three-true-outcomes masher. He has never walked less than 10% of the time, and since getting to full-season ball, he has never struck out less than 29% of the time. He also led all Low-A and High-A hitters with 35 home runs in 131 games last year -- next closest was Sam Huff with 28. Defensively, he is better at first base than Josh Bell, but is still a below-average defender there. He had a .955 OPS against righties and a .720 OPS against southpaws, so he could need a platoon partner, given his defensive shortcomings. Unless the designated hitter comes to the National League, Martin will have almost no margin for error -- he needs to keep destroying baseballs with regularity to pull this off.
From an offensive standpoint, Martin appears to be the steal of the 2017 draft, and it's not particularly close. He fell to the 17th round (508 overall), which oversells things a bit, as his $350,000 bonus was the sixth largest from the Pirates' draft class. Nonetheless, he was the Gulf Coast League's best hitter (198 wRC+) and won't turn 19 until June, so it's not like he was a college hitter taking advantage of pitchers who were two and three years younger than him. His left-handed bat should profile anywhere, which is good, as he is seen as a 1B-only prospect, and his glove is even below average at first base right now. Martin has huge raw power, which will be his carrying tool, but he should also excel at getting on base -- he walked at a 19.3 percent clip in the GCL. His pull-heavy approach (50 percent) puts a bit of a cap on his batting average as he moves up the ladder, but he has plenty of time to refine that aspect of his game.
