2025 Fantasy Outlook
Marchan has been organizational depth for Philadelphia and called upon whenever JT Realmuto or Garrett Stubbs has had an injury. Marchan has spent the better part of the past four seasons in Triple-A as an Iron Pig, splitting catching duties with whomever else was on the roster. He's shown a strong willingness to accept walks over the past two seasons as he continues to gain his minor league experience. He has been in the Philadelphia organization since 2016 and has all of 112 plate appearances with the big league club, and half of those came during the Covid season of 2020. Marchan is now out of minor league options, so he either beats out Garrett Stubbs in camp for the back up spot or he is exposed to waivers where his switch-hitting abilities may garner him a chance at more playing time with a second division club who can afford to give the 25-year old catcher a chance to succeed or fail at the big league level. We are more interested in Marchan should a relocation happen before the season starts, because Realmuto does not exactly share his playing time well. Read Past Outlooks

Favorite for backup job
Marchan is favored to win the Phillies' backup catcher job this spring, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Marchan is a decent enough prospect on both sides of the ball who's been knocking on the door ever since 2020, when he appeared in three games and hit his first professional home run at any level. He hasn't done anything to force his way onto the roster, however, hitting .238/.328/.328 at the Triple-A level across parts of four seasons. The 25-year-old is now out of options, which could give him the leg up over career backup Garrett Stubbs, who offers little more than clubhouse leadership. With J.T. Realmuto now in his age-34 season and set to be a free agent, Marchan could be auditioning to be the catcher of the future this spring.

Jan Levine has a slightly smaller rundown of NL options than last week to get you prepared for the North American start to the regular season.

Todd Zola explains how projected playing time and a skills-based approach helps him identify upside plays late in a draft, as well as leading him to put Aaron Judge at the top of his personal rankings.

James Anderson highlights his favorite prospects to target at each infield position, featuring several strong rookie targets at catcher and second base, including Blue Jays second baseman Will Wagner.

Todd Zola examines strategies for the Underdog postseason contest, and notes that while Shoehi Ohtani may be the best player, you may not want to take him first overall.
Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2021
Marchan made his debut as a 21-year-old back in 2020, but after a three-game cameo that season and a run of 20 games in 2021, he's yet to return to the majors. Marchan was never going to be anything more than the third catcher in Philadelphia behind workhorse J.T. Realmuto and clubhouse DJ Garrett Stubbs last season, and with both big-leaguers remaining healthy, Marchan was never called on. He did, however, show signs in his age-24 season that he should have a future in the majors, even if that's only as a backup. Surgery on his hamate bone delayed his season debut until the end of May, but in 51 games for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, he hit .297/.391/.440, good for a 113 wRC+. He only homered twice, giving him a grand total of eight across his eight professional seasons, but he also struck out just 9.7% of the time, a mark that looks even better next to his 11.6% walk rate. With both Realmuto and Stubbs still around, though, Marchan lacks a path to playing time.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Joining Phillies in Toronto
Marchan will replace J.T. Realmuto for the series in Toronto, reports Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer.
ANALYSIS
Realmuto is unable to travel to Canada due to the country's COVID-19 vaccine requirement, giving Marchan the chance to make his season debut. The 23-year-old has posted a .246/.333/.424 line across 135 plate appearances in the minors this season. The Phillies are only in Toronto for two games and Marchan will join Garrett Stubbs as the two options behind the plate.
