2025 Fantasy Outlook
Lopez served as a dominant setup man for a couple of years. When Atlanta signed him last offseason, the assumption was he'd be used in that capacity. However, they made other moves to fortify their bullpen, but there were rotation openings, so Lopez was stretched out in the spring, breaking camp as a starter. Lopez responded with a sparkling 1.99 ERA in 26 appearances (25 starts), though the corresponding 3.44 xFIP and 3.58 SIERA lent some pause. Even so, an ERA in that range exceeds expectations. A bloated 87.0 percent left-on-base rate deflated Lopez's ERA, as did a low 7.5 percent home run per fly-ball mark. He missed time over the second half with right forearm inflammation and right shoulder tightness, but neither is a long-term concern, and the time off was beneficial after he averaged 63 innings over the prior three seasons. If someone wants to pay for his sub-2.00, let them. Pay for a guy you'll deploy for almost all his starts, and you'll be fine. Read Past Outlooks

Cleared to make next start
Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Monday that Lopez is "fine" and has been cleared to make his next Grapefruit League start Saturday versus the Tigers, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
After Lopez's average fastball velocity sat at around 93 miles per hour -- 2.5 ticks below his season average from 2024 -- in his last Grapefruit League outing back on March 7 against the Twins, Atlanta opted to have the right-hander make his most recent spring appearance on the back fields of camp this past week. Lopez apparently made it though that outing without incident, perhaps suggesting that the diminished velocity he displayed March 7 was simply a bout of arm fatigue. Lopez's investors will still want to keep close tabs on his start Saturday, which will likely be the final time he takes the hill this spring before making his season debut next week in Atlanta's four-game opening series in San Diego.

Lopez was a setup man for three different teams in 2023, splitting time between the White Sox, Angels by way of a trade, then Guardians via waiver claim. The 29-year-old compiled a career-best 22 holds and six saves while demonstrating increased velocity on his four-seam fastball that he threw 98.2 mph on average. He relied on the pitch more than ever, throwing the heater a career-high 64.3% of the time with excellent results (.188 BA, 46 strikeouts). After closing out 2023 with a scoreless month of September (11 innings), the right-hander finished with a respectable 3.27 ERA along with 83 strikeouts, his most as a full-time reliever. However, after Atlanta signed Lopez to a 3-year pact, beat writers have reported he will stretch out during spring training to possibly contribute as a starter and reliever. Given his career splits as a starter (4.73 ERA) versus reliever (3.01 ERA), one would think Lopez will hold a setup role once again.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

No innings limit
Atlanta will likely continue providing Lopez extra rest between starts whenever possible, but the right-hander doesn't have an innings limit for this season, reports Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
ANALYSIS
After spending most of the previous three seasons as a reliever, Lopez has been one of the best pitchers in MLB this season with a 1.57 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 76:23 K:BB across 74.1 innings, which is already his highest workload since 2019. Atlanta has made a point of finding extra rest whenever possible for the 30-year-old, as he's made just one start on four days rest, five starts on five days and seven starts on six-plus days. There's no guarantee Lopez will be able to stay fresh down the stretch, but the organization is doing all it can so he remains available and effective for the second half and postseason.
