Ryan Walker

29-Year-Old PitcherRP
San Francisco Giants
2025 Fantasy Outlook
After a promising debut in 2023, Walker made the Giants' Opening Day bullpen last season. The 28-year-old quickly worked his way up the high-leverage ladder, primarily pitching as a setup man until closer Camilo Doval was demoted to the minors. By that point, Walker became manager Bob Melvin's most trusted reliever and was elevated to the closer role in mid-August. By the end of the season, he was the only reliever to record double-digit wins (10), saves (10) and holds (21). Capping off an impressive breakout campaign, Walker was near the top of the leaderboard in several categories among relievers, including ERA (1.94, 12th), WHIP (0.85, 10th) and innings pitched (80, 7th). His 26.9 K-BB percentage ranked 10th and he finished one strikeout shy of 100. Unless San Francisco signs or trades for a more established closer this offseason, Walker enters 2025 as the clear favorite for saves in the Bay Area. Read Past Outlooks

Manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that Walker will open the season as the Giants' closer, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
After Camilo Doval endured a string of poor performances following the All-Star break and was removed from the closer's role in early August, Walker took over as the Giants' primary closer to finish out the 2024 campaign. In addition to providing sterling ratios (1.91 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, 99:18 K:BB over 80 innings) in his high-leverage relief role, Walker collected 10 wins, 10 saves and 21 holds. With the Giants opting not to make any major additions to the bullpen over the offseason, Walker looks like he'll get the chance to close on a full-time basis for the first time in his career. He'll be in position for fewer wins in the ninth-inning role, but if health prevails and he continues to perform at the level he did in 2024, Walker could finish among the league leaders in saves.

Stat Review
How does Ryan Walker compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9

  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
After toiling in the minors since 2018, Walker made his major league debut in late May. He earned the promotion with a .89 ERA and .85 WHIP with Triple-A Sacramento. Walker appeared 49 times with the Giants, serving as an opener on 13 occasions. He fanned batters at a 29.7 percent clip, but his 9.1 percent walk rate was a bit above average. However, the main reason for a high 1.39 WHIP was a bloated .351 BABIP. As unlucky as he was in that realm, an 81.8 percent left on base mark kept the traffic from reaching home. Walker's performance should merit a spot in the Giants opening day bullpen. With several young starting pitchers, he could reprise his opener role. Walker likely won't be a late-inning option, but his strikeout rate is such that he can be relevant in NL-only formats.
