Cooking up cutter
PArizona Diamondbacks
February 17, 2025
Henry said Sunday that he's been working on adding a cutter to his repertoire during the offseason, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. The left-hander is adding a sixth pitch to his mix, which also includes a four-seamer, curveball, sinker, changeup and slider.
ANALYSIS
Henry said the cutter is still a work-in-progress, and the end goal is for it to speed up right-handed batters and make lefties pause when delivered. Change is needed, after both righties and lefties teed off on Henry, who opened the 2024 season in Arizona's rotation before eventually being optioned to Triple-A Reno. The 27-year-old finished with a 7.04 ERA over nine outings (seven starts) for the Diamondbacks. Arizona now has a surplus of starting pitching ahead of Henry, who is likely to begin 2025 at Reno, for whom he has a respectable 4.20 ERA over three seasons in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.

This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
If you are into a younger version of Jose Quintana or Wade Miley, boy do we have a guy for you. Henry's short arm action and delivery hides the ball well enough allowing his stuff to play up well enough to be effective one to two trips through the lineup. He is at his best when he is pitching backwards off his breaking ball and keeping hitters off balance but command issues can lead to him using his pedestrian fastball more often than he truly should use the pitch. To date, the lefty has been much more effective against righties thanks to his changeup as the lefties he has seen have done rather well (.292/.366/.508) compared to the righties (.244/.326/.416.) Henry did not pitch after July 28th due to an elbow strain but was still in the picture for postseason usage in mid-October. That situation bears watching as you consider Henry in your NL-Only leagues or deeper mixed league formats.
Henry put together a few nice starts among his nine with the Diamondbacks last season, but control and home run issues conspired to make his bottom line unsightly. Unfortunately, the left-hander showed poor control and home run tendencies often in the minors, as well, along with a strikeout rate which has declined as he's moved up the organizational ladder. Henry looks like more of a swingman without fantasy appeal over the long haul.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Last chance with Arizona?
PArizona Diamondbacks
February 16, 2025
Alex D'Agostino of SI.com speculates 2025 could be Henry's last chance to stake his claim to a big-league roster spot with the Diamondbacks.
ANALYSIS
Henry had a 4.15 ERA in 17 outings with Arizona in 2023, but he struggled across 38.1 big-league frames last season with a 7.04 ERA. The left-hander is likely to begin 2025 at Triple-A Reno but should receive a look with the Diamondbacks at some point, and further struggles could jeopardize his place on the 40-man roster.
