Cut from big-league camp
The Nationals reassigned Blankenhorn to minor-league camp Monday.
ANALYSIS
After slugging 23 home runs and getting on base at a .360 clip with Triple-A Rochester last season, Blankenhorn earned a cup of coffee with the Nationals in September. He proceeded to slash a middling .161/.297/.258 in 37 plate appearances for the big club before being shut down for the final two weeks of the campaign with plantar fasciitis. The Nationals outrighted Blankenhorn off the 40-man roster over the winter, only for the 27-year-old to rejoin the organization on a minor-league deal. Though he attended spring training as a non-roster invitee, Blankenhorn never looked like a serious threat to make the Opening Day roster and will now head back to Rochester.

Blankenhorn has made only 31 plate appearances at the major-league level -- none in 2023 -- but the 27-year-old boasts an .883 OPS with 23 homers and 75 RBI in 107 games this season for Triple-A Rochester. He's been especially hot since the beginning of August and Washington could use some outfield help for the stretch run.

Blankenhorn could carve out a utility role this season with the Twins. He's passable at second base and third base but doesn't excel anywhere in the field. He's not considered a top prospect at age 23, but hit 278/.312/.474 with 18 home runs and 11 steals in 93 games at Double-A in 2019 and played one game with the Twins in 2020. He'll likely provide depth and move between Triple-A and the majors this summer.
