April 24, 2024
Danish signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Wednesday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Danish has been without a team since opting out of his minor-league deal with the Nationals last July. He holds a 5.06 ERA through 53.1 career innings and will give the Rockies organizational pitching depth, though he doesn't project to contribute much at the big-league club.

A second-round draft pick back in 2013, Danish has quietly moved up the ranks of the White Sox's farm system thanks to several good seasons in the minor leagues. Things took an even better turn for him this past season, as he received his first stint with the major league club during the month of June. Still, the 22-year-old's season as a whole was a struggle. His time as a starter with Double-A Birmingham was serviceable, as he posted a mediocre 4.42 ERA, but did hold a strong 1.16 WHIP and a promising 3.11 FIP. The surprise callup to Chicago proved a disaster, though, as he was shellacked for two runs on six hits and three walks in just 1.2 innings pitched. The right-hander finished the campaign at Triple-A Charlotte and he continued to struggle in his first taste of that level. Danish still has some good peripherals working in his favor along with a nice slider, but he'll need more seasoning in the minors before he can realistically contribute on the South Side.
Danish has been one of the under-the-radar pitchers in the White Sox’s organization despite his status as a second-round pick, as his low-90s fastball and overall arsenal did not wow like those of Carlos Rodon and Frankie Montas. However, Danish breezed through his first two seasons in professional baseball, posting a 131:38 K:BB and a 1.07 WHIP in his 159.2-inning ascent to High-A. However, things got a bit tougher in Double-A in 2015, where he allowed more hits than innings pitched and his strikeout rate plummeted to 14.2%. Still, the scouts like his makeup and his slider, and more success in a repeat season at Double-A could put him on track to reach the big leagues in 2017 or 2018.
Danish impressed in his first full professional season. The 2013 second-round pick was quickly promoted to High-A Winston-Salem, where he struck out more than three times as many as he walked in a league where he was (on average) more than three years younger than the competition. He uses a nearly-sidearm delivery to throw a low-90s fastball and an impressive slider, but the delivery may raise injury concerns in the future. He should spend much of 2015 either at High-A once again or Double-A Birmingham.
Danish was the White Sox's second pick in the 2013 amateur draft out of high school, and they were able to lure him away from the University of Florida. He struck out 28 and walked only five in 30 mostly-relief innings thanks to a low-90s fastball and advanced slider. He could progress through the system quickly if the organization keeps him in the bullpen, but they may yet try him in a starting role as part of the effort to maximize the value of their assets as the rebuilding effort of the minor league system continues.
