2025 Fantasy Outlook
Holton outperformed his expected stats once again, but he generated fantasy value in multiple ways. The lefty earned seven wins, eight saves and 14 holds during the regular season along with a pristine 0.76 WHIP that ranked sixth among qualified relievers. Holton's strikeout and whiff rates were below league average, but he limited traffic thanks to a 4.8 percent walk rate (94th percentile). Holton was excellent against left-handed hitters, holding them to a .153 BAA with a sinker-sweeper approach. He also fared better against right-handed bats (.187 BAA), deploying a cutter, changeup and fastball with the occasional curve. With six pitches at his disposal, Holton will be a valuable weapon for the Tigers in 2025, especially since he was their most trusted reliever in the playoffs. Holton's versatility - being able to serve as an opener, closer, or work multiple innings - may influence whom Detroit deploys in the ninth inning on any particular day. Read Past Outlooks

Sharp in limited spring work
Through four Grapefruit League appearances, Holton has allowed one run on two hits and two walks across 3.2 innings while striking out three.
ANALYSIS
The Tigers haven't used Holton heavily so far this spring after the lefty logged a career-high 94.1 innings during the regular season last year followed by 5.2 more innings in the postseason. Holton was effective in the regular season with a 2.19 ERA and 0.78 WHIP, and he was able to give the Tigers some length out of the bullpen when needed. The 28-year-old also recorded eight saves as a secondary option behind Jason Foley, who led the team with 28 saves. Foley is still likely the top closing candidate in Detroit heading into 2025, but both Holton and newcomer Tommy Kahnle figure to be in the mix as well.

Several job battles have been settled around the American League, including the Royals' fifth starter job, which appears to have been won by Kris Bubic.

Strong spring performances can make a player worthy of a pickup before the season even begins, especially if that performance wins a player a starting role like it appears to have done for the Cubs' Matt Shaw.

Todd Zola tries to remove volume from the equation when determining the value of pitchers, and finds that the market may have over-corrected on Logan Webb.
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Holton didn't make Detroit's Opening Day roster, but he was recalled early in the season despite opening with a few rough outings for Triple-A Toledo (4 HR allowed over 7.2 innings). The southpaw ended up being one of the league's most pleasant surprises, leading qualified relievers with 85.1 innings while ranking 2nd with a 0.87 WHIP. The bulk reliever mixed six pitches effectively, including a new slider (.135 BA) that he threw almost exclusively to left-handed batters. Holton's 91.5 mph 4-seamer didn't blow away hitters and his 22.8% strikeout rate was below average, but he didn't issue many free passes either. In fact, his 5.3% walk rate was T-10th among qualified relievers. However, some ratio regression should be expected in 2024, as Holton's 2.11 ERA didn't sync up with his 3.55 FIP or 3.60 SIERA. Expect the Tigers to deploy the left-hander in a similar capacity this season.
