2025 Fantasy Outlook
Russell had yet another tumultuous season in 2024-25. He began the season in Los Angeles, but he quickly fell out of favor with the Lakers as he shot 41.3 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arc. A mid-season return to Brooklyn didn't change his trajectory either, as he once again struggled to find a rhythm on offense. Overall, Russell made 58 regular-season appearances with averages of 12.6 points, 5.1 assists, 2.8 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 1.9 three-pointers, placing him outside the top-150 in standard leagues on a per-game basis. In free agency, the Mavericks aggressively pursued Russell and signed him to a two-year, $13 million deal. Russell is projected to start on Opening Night, filling the void until the Mavericks get Kyrie Irving (knee) back at some point after the new year. Even while Irving is sidelined, it's fair to wonder how much usage Russell will be allotted next to the likes of Anthony Davis, Cooper Flagg, Klay Thompson and P.J. Washington. For that reason, Russell projects as mostly a streaming option or short-term rental at the beginning of the season. Read Past Outlooks

Russell enters his third season as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers since rejoining the squad mid-way through the 2022-23 campaign. He is coming off a strong year in 2023-24, where he averaged at least 18.0 points per game for the fifth time in his nine-season career. He shot considerably well from long range, averaging at least 3.0 made three-pointers per game for just the second time in his career, and he shot a career-best 41.5 percent from deep. Regular season and playoffs combined, Russell hit the 20-point mark 32 times last season, including five games with at least 30 and a season-high 44 points. He did well in his primary role as a distributor, averaging 6.3 assists per game to tie the third-best rate of his career. He logged at least 10 assists on 11 occasions and averaged 17.4 points and just 2.0 turnovers in those outings. Finally, Russell did a good job taking care of the ball, averaging a career-low 2.1 turnovers per game in 2023-24, while also averaging a career-high of 32.7 minutes of playing time. Looking ahead, Russell will enter the season as the starting point guard for the Lakers and will continue to benefit from a great opportunity to thrive alongside the high-level talent of LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Ready to embrace role
Russell said Wednesday that he's going to embrace his role with the second unit, Grant Afseth of the Dallas Hoops Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
"Be a basketball player whenever I get in the game," Russell said of his mindset. "Like I said, it just comes down to winning and finishing the game. However, I can help finish a game if need be, and always impact winning, is my goal as well." Russell logged just 15 minutes in the loss to San Antonio on Opening Night, finishing with six points, three assists and two rebounds. With the Mavericks utilizing a larger lineup with Cooper Flagg at point guard, Russell's upside is quite limited.
