Henderson really struggled at times in his rookie campaign, but there were some signs in the second half. The 2023 No. 3 overall pick was shoved into a playmaking role once Anfernee Simons got injured, leading to mixed results. While he shot below 39 percent and committed 3.4 turnovers per game, Henderson finished the season strong. He averaged 18.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 7.9 assists, 1.4 steals and 2.3 steals over the final 14 games. That stretch showed Henderson's potential, but it's hard to overlook that he averaged 12.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 0.6 steals and 1.2 threes across his first 39 games. He also did his late-season damage with most of the roster missing, as Simons, Shaedon Sharpe and Jerami Grant were notably sidelined. That means three key players will be back and taking away touches, but it's hard to know where things go from here. Henderson should be considered the primary piece to build around, but these other players will inevitably take away touches and playmaking opportunities. There aren't many second-year players with a higher upside, making Henderson one of the most enticing picks in the middle of drafts. His efficiency numbers are likely still going to be terrible for category leagues, but don't be surprised to see Henderson take a major step in Year 2. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Scoot Henderson played high school basketball at Carlton J. Kell High School, where he was a five-star recruit. As a junior, he averaged 32 points, seven rebounds and six assists and was selected Class 6A Player of the Year. Graduating at 17 years old, before his senior year, and joining the Ignite, he became the youngest player to ever play in the G League. He started 18 of his 19 appearances for the Ignite, averaging 16.5 points on 43/28/76 shooting, 6.5 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 30.7 minutes. In February of 2022, the guard appeared in the Rising Stars Challenge at NBA All-Star weekend. In October of 2022, he played a pair of exhibition games against Metropolitans 92, the French team that Victor Wembanyama plays for. Henderson is a hyper-athletic, traditionally-sized point guard with excellent feel for the game. He thrives with a head of steam in both transition and the halfcourt, searching to attack the rim. When he gets defenders on their heels, he can pull up from the mid-range with a jumper or runner. His vision in the pick-and-roll keeps all of his teammates involved and helps them get easy looks. Defensively, Henderson has the athleticism to launch himself into passing lanes or rise up for helpside blocks. There is star potential with Henderson, who understandably noted that one of his favorite players is Russell Westbrook - their games being similar, though Henderson may have more patience in the halfcourt. At 6-foot-2 with great playmaking ability, he's definitely a point guard, so the team selecting him very early in the draft should have ideas to give him the keys to the offense as a rookie.

ANALYSIS Henderson is currently in concussion protocol and is not ready to return for Portland. The Trail Blazers will likely turn to Dalano Banton, Shaedon Sharpe and Rayan Rupert on Sunday to help pick up the slack off the bench in the backcourt in New York.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Damian Lillard was traded to the Bucks this offseason, but the silver lining of parting ways with a franchise icon is it clears the way for Henderson to take over at point guard. With Portland seemingly set to enter a multi-year rebuild, Henderson should have a long leash and be in line for a significant workload right away alongside fellow-high-upside young players Anfernee Simons and Shaedon Sharpe. Henderson has the talent to be the Blazers' offensive hub, though he'll cede plenty of possessions to Simons and Jerami Grant, who the Blazers signed to a lucrative extension this offseason. So while Henderson has the keys to the franchise long-term, he's not exactly walking into a barren wasteland of a roster. In terms of what fantasy managers should expect, Henderson will likely go through the usual rookie guard ups and downs: field goal percentage and turnovers could be an issue, as could both three-point (27.5% FG in the G League) and free-throw shooting (76% FT). Even so, Henderson should rack up counting stats with ease, making him even more appealing to managers in points leagues.

Selected to Rising Stars
GPortland Trail Blazers
January 29, 2025
The NBA announced Tuesday that Henderson was selected to the Rising Stars Game.
ANALYSIS Henderson's second NBA season got off to a rocky start, but he has appeared to turn a corner in January. Over his last 15 games, the point guard has compiled averages of 14.0 points, 5.2 assists, 3.3 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 1.9 three-pointers on 48.9 percent from the field. If the Trail Blazers end up being sellers at the deadline, Henderson could be catapulted into a much larger role.
