Johnson, an incoming freshman, requested a release from his letter of intent with Kansas on Saturday, Gary Bedore of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson initially signed his LOI in November. However, the 6-foot-5 guard has apparently decided to re-open his recruitment, as Kansas coach Bill Self confirmed on Saturday that Johnson asked for a release from the program, per Bedore. With Kansas bringing in high-profile transfers Hunter Dickinson and Nicolas Timberlake in the offseason and likely to enter the upcoming season as the No. 1 ranked team in most polls, Johnson may have struggled to carve out much of a role as a true freshman. The Montverde Academy product should attract significant interest from teams in need of additional backcourt depth. Johnson, who is a consensus top-75 overall recruit in the class of 2023, also received scholarship offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Creighton and Houston, among others.
