2025 Tournament PreviewIn just his second season at the helm, legendary coach Rick Pitino led St. John's to the Big East regular-season title and its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2019. The 6-7 RJ Luis Jr. (18.1 ppg, 7.1 rpg) took a massive leap in his second year at St. John's, posting nine double-doubles, while star guard Kadary Richmond (12.8 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 5.4 apg) and 6-9 Zuby Ejiofor (13.8 ppg, 8.1 rpg) transferred in to become key contributors. St. John's plays fast, but lockdown defense is its calling card. The Red Storm is No. 2 nationally in defensive efficiency (per KenPom), ranking top 20 in turnover rate and opponent effective field-goal percentage and ninth in opponent two-point shooting. Resume is the biggest question for St. John's. A weak Big East resulted in just three Quad 1 wins, though the Red Storm is undefeated in the other three quadrants, and losses to Baylor and Georgia raise questions about how they might fare against power-conferences foes.
