2025 Fantasy Outlook
Although he lost a position battle for the Week 1 starting QB job to Gardner Minshew before the 2024 regular season commenced, O'Connell ultimately managed to start seven games for the Raiders last year. However, O'Connell will already be 27 years old in early September, and it's becoming pretty evident in this stage of his development that he's more likely on a career backup trajectory than projected to become the centerpiece of a pro offense. Incoming GM John Spytek and coach Pete Carroll acted accordingly when they traded for veteran Geno Smith, who's now locked into the QB1 role for Las Vegas ahead of O'Connell and rookie sixth-rounder Cam Miller. Coach's Decision
November 30, 2025
O'Connell (coach's decision) is inactive but will serve as the Raiders' emergency third quarterback against the Chargers on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
For a second straight week, O'Connell will be the Raiders' QB3 behind Geno Smith and Kenny Pickett. As the emergency quarterback, O'Connell is not allowed to play Sunday unless both Smith and Pickett were to leave the game due to injury, illness or ejection.

This Week's Opposing Pass Defense
How does the Chargers pass defense compare to other NFL teams this season?
The bars represents the team's percentile rank (based on QB Rating Against). The longer the bar, the better their pass defense is. The team and position group ratings only include players that are currently on the roster and not on injured reserve. The list of players in the table only includes defenders with at least 3 attempts against them.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
O'Connell lost a summer job battle with Gardner Minshew for the Week 1 starting job. A 2023 fourth-round pick, O'Connell began last season as the No. 3 QB only to be named starter Week 9 over both Jimmy Garoppolo and backup Brian Hoyer (after coach Josh McDaniels was fired). O'Connell's arm is merely average, and while he had his moments he was by no means prolific. He ranked 28th in on-target percentage (68.5) and 27th in completion percentage (62.1) even though he didn't throw many deep passes. Seventy-one percent of his passes came within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage (4th most), while only 8.7 percent traveled 20-plus yards (22nd). His 6.5 YPA ranked 25th, and he threw just 12 TD passes in 11 games. O'Connell also is immobile -- zero scrambles last season, with his 17 rush attempts mostly being sneaks or kneel-downs. Minshew was a slightly more efficient passer in 13 starts for Indianapolis last year, and he's always been willing to scramble when plays break down. If O'Connell ends up playing this year, he'll throw to veteran WRs Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers as well as young TEs Brock Bowers (a rookie first-round pick) and Michael Mayer (a second-round pick last year). The offense will be directed by former Bears coordinator Luke Getsy, who fielded one of the league's worst passing offenses the last two years in Chicago.
O'Connell turned a preferred walk-on spot at Purdue into a pair of second-team All-Big Ten honors by the time he left, completing 635 of 939 pass attempts for 7,202 yards and 50 touchdowns versus 24 picks in 24 games over his final two seasons with the Boilermakers. The Raiders subsequently spent a fourth-round pick on O'Connell (who will be 25 years old by the time Week 1 arrives) in the 2023 NFL Draft, and coach Josh McDaniels likely views O'Connell as a developmental project behind starter Jimmy Garoppolo, with veteran Brian Hoyer's experience probably giving him the edge for primary backup duties.

Set to back up Geno
QBLas Vegas Raiders
March 13, 2025
O'Connell is projected to slot in as the backup to Geno Smith in 2025 after the Raiders traded for Smith and released Gardner Minshew with a failed physical designation.
ANALYSIS
O'Connell and Minshew competed for the starting quarterback role heading into the 2024 season, with Minshew eventually winning the competition. Both quarterbacks dealt with injuries, including a collarbone injury from which Minshew still hasn't recovered, and O'Connell ended up posting a 2-5 record in seven starts while Minshew started nine games and Desmond Ridder started one. The depth chart is much more clearly defined heading into 2025, with Smith on top followed by O'Connell.
